Mad As Hell - Observations on a tragedy
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 07:19 PM by TornadoTN
I have been glued to this entire situation since it passed through Florida, watching it make its final path into the Gulf Coast. It was surreal, a feeling of impending disaster looming in the distance. Our government was totally unprepared perhaps even uninterested in ensuring the best response was given from the top-down. Sure, the Red Cross has stepped up to the plate and the brave people of the Coast Guard, and the people on the ground in the cities. The storm blew through and all of the talking heads were proclaiming that this was "nothing like we thought", even though all around them were scenes of incredible destruction and even an impending disaster with the levees. Now, we see the destruction, the loss of life that is going to be staggering and the lives that have totally been sent into chaos. It truly is a sad and emotionally charged scene that many are struggling with, including myself.

I have been to New Orleans, just this past October was the last time for business. The city is amazing and filled with some amazing people, largely recpetive and welcoming to all of us. Watching the scenes today, I saw so many places that I recognized it really ripped at my heart. Seeing the people displaced, in shock and totally torn apart made me really look at the state of our country. I came home, kissed my wife and spent some time just holding my two month old son, thinking about how lucky that I am to be able to come home to an actual house and be able to hold my family.

While I feel lucky, I am also very, very pissed about how this disaster has been treated by this administration. Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised, but part of me thought that the partisan and neocon mindset would be cast aside to deal with true, human tragedy in our own backyard. Our President, who is supposed to lead, decided that he would rather play politics, hit the links and pal around with John McCain rather than do the "Presidential" thing by giving aid, support and comfort to the people of the affected areas. He gave a few canned responses about the hurricane and then quickly ran on to other pet subject, such as our Iraq debacle. He even had the gall to compare himself to Franklin Roosevelt and compare Iraq to World War II. Unbelievable, but not surprising at the same time. We have sent our National Guard and their equipment to Iraq, when they could have and should have been used here, in these circumstances. We are blowing billions of dollars in Iraq, when it will cost much much more to rebuild the city of New Orleans alone. Bush has cut the funding that could have helped avoid or at the very least, better prepare to respond. This disaster could have even been lessened had a mere 14 billion dollars been invested in a program that called for the channeling of the Mississippi river back to its natural flow areas in the southern-most marshes. We are blowing that in Iraq every 2 weeks. 2 weeks in Iraq are worth more to this administration than the possiblity that a catastrophe of these proportions could have been avoided. Oh, thats right, doing something like that would cause a hardship on the oil facilities in that particular area. Nevermind they could adapt, we are all about profit now. Bush's actions were clear before the storm, when his people called the Mayor of New Orleans to inquire about the oil infrastructure preparation.

Now we get to watch Bush try to act like he gives a damn about these people, when in reality, he could care less and thats pretty damn obvious by his actions of the last few days. All of us here at DU already knew Bush was an evil, worthless waste of a President, but if the rest of America doesn't wake up to these games, then I truly weep for our nation. Bush doesn't have to answer to anyone anymore. Polls mean nothing, he doesn't have to run for election again.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just awash in emotions right now and needed a place to vent. I know I was a bit disjointed in my thoughts, and I promise to be a bit more eloquent next time. It's time for all of us to band together and help our fellow man, while at the same we need to get the word out about how this administration has contributed to the disaster over their actions over the course of their term in office. Anyway, I'm going back to stare at my son, who is sleeping and hope that we can do something to make his and many others futures as bright as ours once was.

Peace from Tennessee

*Edited for terrible, terrible typos!*

46. Make Bush pay for this
We have had some pretty good results by taking what we know and getting the facts out to the mixed message boards.

If you haven't already try posting in any kinds of mixed forums and chats as the right wingers are out there trying to blame Clinton and pass all kinds of lies about the high price of gasoline and the causes of the disaster in New Orleans and the South.

6. Feel free to vent...
I think the rest of the country is waking up to DUH-bya's true nature.

Unfortunatley, his uncaring "meism" attitude will be drowned out in the coming months by those who will help and do give a damn.

He will somehow make it all about how he did something when all's said and done. :(

Let's never forget to remind everyone we see who's doing all the real work and caring in the devastated areas.

He is a sharp, intelligent little guy. I know all parents are proud by nature, but this little guy is the light of our lives.

I was dedicated before, but I'm determined to make sure that I do my part to make this country a better place, not for myself, but for him and his generation. Because in reality, his generation is going to be the one thats going to have to deal with a lot of the "crap" that this administration has done. (I'm only 26, but I think we have a big job ahead of us)

10. Adding a bit
Let me also rant a bit about the responses of so many on the conservative side of the aisle.

I am hearing more and more about how the people trapped there now were just "ghetto" and idiots for not getting out. If you want to know why I characterize these responses and label them mainly conservative or neocon responses, just go look at your typical right-wing website, listen to the news reporters talk more and more about how people decided to stick it out. Do they not realize that over 40% of the city (almost a majority of over 50%) lives well below the poverity level? I have been there and these arm chair quarterbacks don't even seem to grasp the reality of things in New Orleans, Pre-Katrina. So many people, minorities mainly, worked 7 days a week in menial jobs serving tourists for minimum wage just to live in those tiny little houses and provide the best they could for their families. They had no way out, all they had was in New Orleans, in all liklihood most could not even afford to entertain the notion of evacuating.

Now they have nothing and the Neocons have the audacity to blame these people for their misfortune. RIDICULOUS!

13. Good point....
Some of us (who on paper aren't near the poverty line) have a panic attack if we consider evacuating; will we be able to afford gas?

A hotel is out of the question. If we get delayee between here and GA relatives' house, we sleep in the car.

It's scary even for those of us lucky enough to consider hightailing it.

I can't imagine being truly FORCED to stay! :scared:

16. This highlighting of the haves and have nots has been the most
infuriating and depressing of this situation for me. So much money to spend on death and destruction, but nothing to help people who didn't have the means to escape this catastrophe. It makes me so angry that people just can't seem to wrap their brains around people not being able to afford to leave and to go to stay somewhere out of harm's way.

I don't fully understand why the officials in NO didn't do more to try to evacuate people, but the whole thing has my stomach tied in knots.

26. It's not just *the ghetto* or poverty
A lot of the people who didn't leave have come to distrust public officials in general over the last however many decades--why SHOULD they trust them?

They were damned if they did and damned if they didn't.

The disparity between rich and poor in this country is (to coin a phrase) SINFUL!

Where IS that POS holding that office?

I hope this doesn't come off as flippant...but all the hoopla over 911? We have three freaking states experiencing an over the top 911 currently...and yet where is that asshole? Oh yeah, he's returning *early* to DC -- in other words that pile of crap is coming back on the 31st which is what he was scheduled to do anyway.

Does this remind anyone else of his reading about the goat until, he was scheduled for his press conference as planned on 911 or what?

God help the people in NOLA and Mississippi and Alabama and God help the rest of us because this asshole has no intentions of doing anything but driving the nation into the ground.

Thats my problem, anguish for the people and even anguish for the Governor and the Mayor, as well as their support staff. Heck, even Haley Barbour, who I can't stand, has put his politics aside to take care of his people.

So many people affected by this, yet our President and our government decide to say "Relax!" and remind us about 9/11. What are they afraid of? That we might wise up to the song and dance and demand accountability?

something from this devastation. Clearly he doesn't give a damn about the people who are suffering, but the oil and the infrastructure and the costs of rebulding...and maybe the ability to buy up people's property? Is something going on here that isn't clear? WHY IS BUSH SO HAPPY? It seems like more than just his usual sociopathic hollowness. He seems really pleased.
