A call to alms
I just recieved this in my e-mail. It seems important enough to pass it on. Sorry about the caps. I'm posting it as is:

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME DAY, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.
AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES.
THEREFORE THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 1st HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT UP THEIR BEHIND" DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THESE TWO NATIONS SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT DAY.
THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO
AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE
WORD OUT.
WAITING ON THE GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.
REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC.
WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO!
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER
ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.
SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO
EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA SAY
"ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"

2. This was debunked a year ago
It won't work. Besides, no way would enough folks participate to make a dent. I was an active union leader for many years. I learned that boycotts rarely work. Most people are selfish enough to do what they need to do (like shop at WalMart) in spite of the larger negative social ramifications.

4. I'm still boycotting grapes,
Haven't bought any since the late 70's. And I love grapes.
Never heard of it ending so...

5. And I respect that
Really. But you are a rare exception. People just don't honor boycotts anymore so they are pretty ineffective. Last one I participated in was a grocery store boycott to support striking workers. One of the shoppers I handed a flyer to at the door said "But I live right up the street from this store."

I have never forgotten that. Most folks nowadays do not want to be inconvenienced.

6. I know what you mean proud, most never
want to sacrifice. Even when told of how terribly others are affected by policies and actions of corps., until it affects them personally there is rarely a word spoken.
The selfishness and apathy rampant in this country is appalling. No wonder * is still in office.
It saddens me, but I will never remain silent.
