Didn't somebody mention Cruise Ships?
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 08:08 PM by stillcool47
This is from the Guardian:http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-5244433,00.html

"The Federal Emergency Management Agency is considering putting people on cruise ships, in tent cities, mobile home parks, and so-called floating dormitories - boats the agency uses to house its own employees."

...and at the bottom of the article....
"Sean Jeffries of New Orleans had already been evacuated from one French Quarter hotel when he was ordered out of a second hotel Tuesday because of rising water.

The 37-year-old banker - who admitted to looting some food from a nearby supermarket - said the hotel guests were told they were being taken to a convention center, but from there, they didn't know.

``We're in the middle of a national tragedy,'' he said as he popped purloined grapes in his mouth. ``But I know this city. We will be back. It may take awhile. But we will be back.''"

2. Excellent idea, but...
...Considering the history of top leaders (white house) to stroke/coddle big business, the sudden grasp of leadership skills to do the right thing for the majority is a little suspect.

If you know what I mean?

5. I just thought it was rather ironic....
after hanging out here quite a bit today...to see the Guardian quoting FEMA... posing ideas seen here. And I really liked the banker admitting looting..but in his case i'm sure its no problem.

10. good thing he wasn't looting pampers
saw a black man slammed to a police car with pampers as his booty, good thing the banker knew he was entitled to simple necessities. :sarcasm:

7. The cruise industry is big business and those
ships, all but a couple in Hawaii, do not fly the US flag. Expect no help from the cruise industry.

8. The US has standing agreements with airlines and shipping co.s
I wish I could remember the name of the program, and I doubt if there are cruise ships.

Nice thing about troop transports if they could get them would be that all the pieces are already put together...shelter, electricity, water, kitchens.

13. Cruise Ships--various possibilities
I suspect that if the authorities wanted to charter cruise ships as temporary dormitories, they could do so.

I think that both Carnival and Royal Caribbean have a couple of older ships that they could probably spare from one or another of their various brands.

Furthermore, some other cruise ship operators here in North America and in Europe have some ships out of service that they'd be delighted to charter as floating dormitories. Those ships are older, economically marginal, but while they may be costly to sail, the a/c and the plumbing should work.

Just don't expect fun and games on the Lido deck.
