that the government was going to put a 3-star general in charge of coordinating the full consequences of this storm - which is not going to just hit these coastal areas, but all through the Tennessee and Ohio valley.
The Ohio and Mississippi, two big rivers could flood large land masses potentially.

5. then everything is underwater |

including the French Quarter, which MIGHT survive a Pontchartrain flood. But if the Miss goes, it floods it all.

|
That's what they usually do....does anyone know?

thankfully. And it can absorb a storm surge better than Pontchartrain.
But if that levee were ever topped over, New Orleans would meet its fate.

didn't happen for some reason and now the pump has failed at the 17th street canal. The lake is 3 ft above sea level. It will now flow into New orleans which is on average 9 feet below sea level. There is nothing to stop it and this is the worse case scenerio now happening. My brothers house, in the Bywater, near the river levee had been spared flooding. By morning it will have 8 ft of water in it. The French Quarter too will be at least 6 feet and the Garden District downtown will be 6-9. This is it, folks.
My heart is breaking !!!!

12. The rains all day here in Indiana (and elsewhere) |
|
are causing Flooding that is going to go downstream to New Orleans.
I don't know if it can be held back upstream or not - or how much.
I was thinking I read somewhere that the Lake Ponchartrain situation made it more difficult to divert water from the Mississippi.

Nothing has been posted yet. But there are a couple posts on this thread that say the same thing. The reporter I heard said that the levee close to Jackson Square and the aquarium on the riverfront has broken. I have been to NO many many times. I know where Jackson Square is. I know where the aquarium is. That would be the Mississippi River right there next to the aquarium, correct?

fuck. I just got off watching tv news videos and am shocked. I knew it was bad, but thought that it might be partially internets inflated (internet news getting inflated I mean) but I was wrong. It is bad. They show pictures of different places, then more different place, then more different places, then more different places. Oh crap.

MSNBC reporter just said that levee HAS broken and the mayor ordered NO evacuated. Maybe he was misinformed. But that's what I heard him say.

19. From the WWLTV blog (levee is 17th st canal only) |
|
8:04 P.M. - Mayor Nagin: Unhappy that the helicopters slated to drop 3,000-pound bags into the levee never showed up to stop the flow of water. Too many chiefs calling shots he says.
7:59 P.M. - Mayor Nagin: Pumps at 17th street canal has failed and water will continue pouring into the city. Nine feet of water is expected on St. Charles Avenue that will be nine feet high. Water is expected to spread throughout the east bank of Orleans and possibly Jefferson Parish. ...
6:41 P.M. - Efforts to stop the levee break at the 17th Street Canal have ended unsuccessfully and the water is expected to soon overwhelm the pumps in that area, allowing water to pour into the east bank of Metairie and Orleans to an expected height of 12-15 feet.

|
waters into the Atchafalaya Basin. Around New Orleans, there is not just one long levee.
