The reports are so inconclusive.... |

does anybody know if the Mississippi levees have been breached?
It took many hours before it was confirmed that the Pontchartrain levee was breached. I've heard the Miss one has gone, but it's not confirmed.
Of course, I've also heard that N.O. was being evacuated, that the Superdome was being evacuated, etc. etc. etc. and little confirmation.
But I'm most worried about the Mississippi levees. Does anybody know? This will be the difference between saving the French Quarter and losing it.

1. As far as I know....no it hasnt.... |
|
I would have received some news of it if it had. Also, downtown/FQ would be under 12 feet of water and it would be all over the news. It isn't all over the news.

but there were reports earlier that that was the case.
And it took a VERY long time before it was "confirmed" that the Canal levee had been breached.

3. I am wondering same after seeing vid of what looked like a MS river breach |
|
The video showed homes partly under water. To the right was what looked like a levee with a breach, and to the right of that was what I would call a river -- a well-defined band of water -- definitely not the Lake, and beyond that more city. There was some wave action/fixed white caps towards the middle of the river from the breach, implying rushing water.
Tuesday morning I heard that the Quarter, which had remained dry till then, was slowly starting to fill with water. This might be the cause.
Sorry. It looks bad all around.

6. I believe the well-defined band of water is a canal... |
|
...that connects to the lake.

I'm not familiar with New Orleans (obviously), but having seen the video again I think it was the 17th St Canal. Do you know, or can anyone explain how the NOLA canal system works? Thanks!

9. That is the industrial canal that runs next to the 9th ward. |
|
It breeched. Also there was a breech in the floodwalls on the 17th street canal.

8. I spoke to someone on Toledano in Uptown last night |
|
and as of that time the MS levee had not breached and it was completely dry on Tchoupitoulas. He had just driven down there to scope out an escape route. That was at 8:30 last night. I have not seen any decent reports on where the flooding is this morning. The national press just doesn't know NO's neighborhoods well enough to give a good description and local press is stretched to thin and exhausted.
