The Red Cross began reorganizing Hurricane Katrina refugees into larger shelters Tuesday, hunkering down for what could be a stay lasting into weeks, according to one spokeswoman.
State officials in a conference call Tuesday said they were turning people back at the Texas-Louisiana border attempting to either return home or help out, according to Kenneth Williams, Lufkin assistant city manager. Only authorized personnel were being allowed back in, he said.
Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco urged residents to remain in shelters until weather and road conditions could be evaluated, according to a press release issued Monday. Residents would not be allowed back into southeast portions of the state, including Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes, due to "extremely dangerous" conditions. State police were not allowing any travel into New Orleans or areas south.
Evacuees in Angelina, Nacogdoches and surrounding counties needing assistance should go to the designated shelter hub, the Nacogdoches city recreation center and library, 1112 North St. Nacogdoches is 20 miles north of Lufkin on U.S. Highway 59.
