BAGHDAD, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Following are security incidents reported in Iraq on Wednesday, Aug. 31, as of 0630 GMT.
U.S. and Iraqi forces are battling a Sunni Arab insurgency against the Shi'ite and Kurdish-led government in Baghdad.
BAGHDAD - Five people died and 36 were wounded when mortar rounds landed in the northern Baghdad district of Kadhimiya as Shi'ite pilgrims attended a religious ceremony at an important mosque, police said.
KIRKUK - One Iraqi policeman died and four were wounded when a roadside bomb struck their patrol in Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
Another policeman died and two civilians were wounded during clashes between gunmen. It was unclear who was involved in the clashes, police said.
TAL AFAR - The U.S military said a U.S soldier was killed by insurgent gunfire near the northern Iraqi town of Tal Afar, west of Mosul, on Saturday.
TAL AFAR - A U.S soldier was killed and another wounded when their helicopter was forced to land after coming under hostile fire from insurgents near Tal Afar on Monday, the U.S. military said.
