Labor Day Weekend: stay home, donate
This seems so obvious that maybe everyone will do it without needing for it to be suggested, but considering that (1) gas prices are likely to reach an average of $3/gallon around the country by this weekend; (2) spot gas shortages are to be expected in the near future because of supply disruptions; and (3) huge inflows of cash are needed to fund relief efforts along the Gulf Coast: Americans should spend their Labor Day weekends at or near home, and might consider donating the money they would have spent on a driving vacation to a relief organization. Or donating the time they would have spent doing volunteer work, if they're in a place where it would help.

Does that make sense?

1. I hear there is a plan to keep everyone from purchasing gas tomorrow
September 1st. This has been going around in an email.
I am staying home and donating what we can to the efforts in NO and other places.

2. I've been yelling that at the TV
How bad does it have to get for the current administration to call for fuel conservation? We should be asked to curtail of gasoline usage. Also there should be an effort to make our houses more energy efficient for this coming winter.

You make an excellent point about donating your labor day vacation cash budget to the relief effort. I know it will effect the hotel & resort industry but when are we going to put our national interest before corporate interest?

3. That's a good idea. Typical Labor Day travel might wipe out our gas supply
given how delicate things are now.
