This is from the National Weather Service at 10:11 am CST on Sunday morning:
"A MOST POWERFUL HURRICANE WITH UNPRECEDENTED STRENGTH..."
"MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...PERHAPS LONGER."
"HIGH RISE OFFICE AND APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL SWAY DANGEROUSLY...A
FEW TO THE POINT OF TOTAL COLLAPSE."
"WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS."http://kamala.cod.edu/offs/KLIX/0508281550.wwus74.htmlhttp://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=4487021Read the rest of the warning. It is horrific. Many people here at DU, millions of others, and the federal government's own weather service knew of this impending destruction of a major American city--but did george bush know? If he did not know, who kept the information from him, and why hasn't bush fired them? And if bush did know, yet did little more than offer a few canned platitudes and the usual generic response, he should be impeached today.
If told that a major American city had a good chance of being destroyed, President Clinton or President Gore or President Kerry would have immediately given their undivided attention to minimizing the human suffering. Airlines would not have been asked by local officials if they could send some planes to New Orleans to airlift out people before the storm hit--they would have been told to do so by the President. After billions of taxpayer dollars went to bail out the airline industry after 9/11, a real President would have made it clear that now is the time to help pay back that debt to the American people. A real President would have been proactive in marshalling all the resources of the nation before this monster storm hit--and they would not be grinning at photo ops two days after the storm while thousands of Americans were struggling for their lives and many others heroically tried to rescue them. While watching the television news channels these last couple of days, I have not seen a single smiling face except for one--that of george bush.
The republican party has waged a quarter-century war against the federal government of the United States. This week the people of the gulf coast are suffering the consequences. The looting of our Treasury for tax cuts for the elite and PNAC's war in Iraq has left us without essential services that could have mitigated the damage caused by this hurricane.
The failure of the bush administration to act before 9/11 was a crime against the American people. The Crawford Coward was told bin laden was determined to strike the United States, yet he did absolutely nothing--not a single thing--to prevent it. I live in Manhattan, and I will always hold bush accountable for that day. But bush's failures of this week, his failure of leadership and his failure of compassion for his own people, are far worse. He has sunk to a new low, and the city of New Orleans is sinking with him.
