The 25 deadliest U.S. hurricanes since 1900, according to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane Center, listed with date the hurricane first made landfall and the location, its strength, the number of U.S. fatalities and the estimated U.S. property damage:

Galveston Hurricane (1900)

Sept. 8, Galveston Island, Texas

Category 4

Estimated fatalities: 6,000-12,000

Estimated property damage: $30 million

San Felipe-Okeechobee Hurricane (1928)

Sept. 16, Palm Beach, Fla.

Estimated fatalities: 1,836

Estimated property damage: $25 million
