there. He was 200 miles from the coast of Mississippi. They were gone in 2 hrs. He talked to alot of people, he had to turn people away when he ran out.
The devistation is way beyond what they're conveying on CNN

3. And what should anyone do |
|
after donating money? Rush pell mell into the fray?
I stopped at the local Red Cross and added my name as a volunteer. They'll call me if they need me and I'll go.
With no food, water, power or gas and 1000's of aid workers already, do they need more people straining the system even more?

They are asking people to stay away, the water is rising and they have no room for MORE people. The red cross is atking care of it at this time. Relax... when the time comes the volunteers will come running.

by the Red Cross for disaster relief. :eyes:
I think the Red Cross is overwhelmed and in a bitof denial. A million displaced people... and they're not offering crash courses in disaster training? They wouldn't even take my name in case the Red Cross does start offer training. :grr:
*Edited to add that my local RC chapter--Denver--is home to the national call center, and I am signed up to be trained to work their phones. But I'd rather be in Texas, Louisiana, or Mississippi workign with the people face-to-face.

That's all this is for most Americans...we all have that urge to turn and watch a car crash...we don't want to...but in the end we end up looking...that's basically the way this is..nobody wants to watch the beautiful city of New Orleans fall apart and be destroyed, but as Americans we get so into it (thanks to the news) that, that is all we watch...Speaking of the news thats all they have on! Enough is enough...Don't get me wrong I truly feel sorry for the people of NO, but isn't there anymore news out there??

I realize what I said may have sounded stupid...but it's the truth...I am so sick of turning on my television and seeing nothing but what truly is a horrible disaster...I think this whole thing is making everyone depressed...So I guess I shouldn't have said it that way in my first post...but what we do need a mix in the news as of late...

28. Response has been overwhelming here in Denver. |
|
Denver is home to the Red Cross call center. I went to an orientation yesterday to volunteer as a call center operator. The place was packed--maybe 100 people in a room meant to hold 50. They hold two orientations a day, and I heard that Monday's two orientations were just as packed. (I tried to find out when I could go for training all day on Monday, but only got the volunteer director's voice mail.)
They normally hold a computer training a day for the call center, but they're up to 3 trainings a day. All the trainings were full through next week. The earliest I could get in there to train is a week from today, Sept. 7.
They expect to have the call center open for a minimum of 6 weeks to handle Katrina. I think they're being optimistic. I'll bet it's open for at least 10 weeks.

31. What, exactly would you have us do? |
|
I'm sitting here in anguish at what I'm seeing, wishing so much there were something I could do. But the only thing I can do is donate money. They don't want clothing, they don't want volunteers, they just want money.
We need more National Guard in there, we need more Coast Guard in there saving people -- those aren't things I can do anything about.
Just what would you have us do, those of us whose hearts ARE breaking over this?

35. You're absolutely right |
|
On Sunday, the anchors at CNN could barely hide their glee at the amount of destruction about to be unleashed on NO. They seemed disappointed Monday when Katrina lost some power and swung east. Then, when the levees broke, they went back to full-time coverage. I assume Fox News was the same, but I don't watch that piece of shit.
The most idiotic thing I've heard was from Aaron Brown last night while he was interviewing the Mayor of New Orleans. Brown asked "Mr. Mayor, is it safe in New Orleans right now?" You dumbshit Aaron, of course it's not safe in New Orleans. They just had a FUCKING HURRICANE sweep through, the levees broke, the city is under 20 of water, and looting and crime is breaking out every where. A good portion of the electrical grid is destroyed, gas lines are broken, and the water is poisonous. Disease ridden mosquitoes are everywhere, there's a danger of alligators, and poisonous snakes have been seen. And he asks if it's safe in New Orleans?
Fuck you CNN. Fuck you Fox News.
