So when do we reach 1980 gas prices? |
|
All the apologists (George Will, et al.) keep chanting, "well, adjusted for inflation, gas prices still aren't as high as they were in 1980."
So when do we set the all-time adjusted-for-inflation record?

I didn't realize we'd been underpaying! Well I for one want to do my part and pay more.
:hide:
oh my god did I really just type that???
What could possibly be going through these people's heads with this bedside talk? Hey, we know your mother died a horrible cancer death at 33, but you have to at least consider that the avarage female life expectancy, adjusted for inflation and infant death in 1480 was 17, so your Mom lived twice as long! Now don't you feel better?

7. We're there or just past it. They haven't updated the "national |
|
average" price that I have seen since it was 2.60/gallon. But, we blew by that and most of the times my city is one of the cheaper places. 2.89 right now here.

rent was?? 1500 a month for a studio?? cars cost 25K??? median price house cost $200K?? tomatoes were $3 a lb? people paid 700-1000 a month for health insurance PREMIUMS?? setting a broken foot cost $4K??? college cost 25K or more a year??
Those comparisons don't cut it.. I was there.. It was a "blip"..until a year or so ago , you could still find $1 gas from time to time..and I am in CA..
This whole mess is engineeered to create enormous profits for already-rich people, and to further pummel the little guy.

shows that gas first topped $1.00 a gallon in 1980. However all these "adjusted for inflation" types will ignore the minimum wage going to $3.10 an hour the same year. So. if that one buck gas goes to three, then the minimum wage will need to be raised to $9.30/hr to "adjust for inflation".

your yelping people. The high gas prices will pinch for a while, until people start to become more frugal. I'm not at all upset with the rising costs. Then again...I actually do something called budgeting and live well below my means.

This is the USA, NOT EUROPE! They have MASSIVE public transport over there, plus a LOT of things, like FREEDOM and HEALTH CARE. So that arguement is crap, ok? THANK YOU!

18. As I and others have pointed out before.... |
|
In Europe there are extra taxes tacked on to the gas prices that we don't have here that goes to fund things like an extensive mass transit system and far better highway infrastructure. All of the extra we pay here goes right into the pockets of the Oil CEOs. There is no comparison.

19. Yeah Europeans ALSO have PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. |
|
Something that is sorely lacking in my part of the US, thank you very fucking much.
None, nothing. No buses, no trains, no subways, nothing.
Oh you can call a cab. A seven block drive will cost you $40. Might as well put gas in your car for that.
Or you can walk or ride a bike for miles in the 105 degree heat, be my guest.
I wouldn't mind $7 or $8 a gallon if I could ride a freaking train or subway or bus to get to my job, the market, etc.

With good reason. I can hear the Yanks now, "But they're loud and smelly!" They were in the 70s, that's for sure. A few improvements have been made since then, though.

And considering the poor excuse that we should be paying $3.10 is now a reality, they've gotta come up with something new.
I'm sure, though we'll see on the news that adjusted for inflation, we should really be paying $6 a gallon :eyes:
