Capt. Nora Tyson, USN, commanding officer of the USS Bataan - you GO girl!
In a telephone interview right now with Ron Reagan, she's the capt of this Navy ship onstation off the coast of NO.

A woman ship captain! As a Navy vet and a smack-your-ass liberal, I am damned proud.

Aye, aye, Captain!

1. I heard her. She made me think things will be all right.
I liked her positive attitude, and she was IN CHARGE. There was NO doubt. :)

3. Did you see the young man, Robert, interviewed by
David Schuster? He seemed none too pleased with his fearless leader.
And I gave Capt. Tyson a 'right on' when I heard her.

8. Why she impressed me .....
First ... just cuzza her gender ... a woman as captain of a 'ship of the line'. That's a big deal to me. A woman. Captain.

Next, she just plain sounded calm and competent ..... kinda in that same way Chuck Yeager sounded (as dramatized, too, in the movie "The Right Stuff").

9. Question here
Bush called this ship the "Baton". I've never heard "Bataan" pronounced that way before. Is this the new Bushspeak?

BTW, for many years I worked in a shipyard that did the maintenance and repairs on the USNS Comfort and the Iwo Jima. The USNS Comfort is a hospital ship and the USS Iwo Jima an amphibious assault vessel with a complement of 'copters. Never been on the Iwo Jima but the Comfort was a well-maintained vessel and can handle many patients, including those needing surgeries.

12. Its 'stoopit speak' .... he slept in history class that day ......
The word is pronounced as I suspect **you** pronounce it .... and I pronounce it .... and everyone else pronounces it ....... bah TAN'.

I mean .... idiot son *should* know how to say it ... the reference is to a 1942 WWII battle in the Phillipines .... and the death march of our guys that followed their defeat ... and he likes that sorta thing .... death marches and such.

10. What good news . . . a woman!
I swear, we've let men run things w-a-y too long. Would a woman allow people to drown? I think not. (Sorry, being bitchy, a SANE person wouldn't allow people to drown.)

11. Thanks -- I have been WAITING for the Navy to show up
I've been ranting about this -- and have already sent off emails to Senators and my Congressman asking where the military is.

I'm a Navy brat -- and will always be a Navy brat. I know that my father and others in the military were ALWAYS there when America was in need. I grew up knowing that the military would be there to help in Natural disasters -- and NOW when the worst natural disaster occurs -- I keep asking WHERE IS THE NAVY.

So this one a hopeful sign -- lets hope that this is the first of HUNDREDS of military responses!

The key is that these Navy ships have lots of little boats.
