What is your view of the second amendment in light of the hurricane?
I am thinking about how much trouble there is down there. Especially looters of non-emergency goods and other criminals. I am also considering the need for food and water.

What is your opinion of gun possession in light of this event?

1. I have always been anti-gun...
and I still feel the same way.

Though I had a bit of sympathy toward second-amendmenters, that's gone....

2. Bleachers, Not to hijack but... do you think you'd be able to step up
in a disaster and help lead people out of chaos?

8. I was thinking about that.
I would help anyone at any time if I had the ability to. This is not like that. This is every man for themselves and that is not good. You have to be able to take care of yourself first, before you help others. I am thinking about how I can help. Do I take a week off of work and go down there? I can't figure out how I do not become a burden on the system. I would require sustenance and it doesn't appear that it is available.

3. I wouldn't be surprised if the people that stole the guns were property
owners who wanted them to protect their homes or businesses.

4. More than ever inclined to the view that gun ownership should be
severely restricted and the sale of guns practically impossible. I own guns and if it were possible by legislative fiat, I'd have all handguns melted down tomorrow. Shotguns and rifles should be registered and cost the Moon in annual taxes to possess.

5. My support of the Second Amendment is strengthened
People need the ability to protect themselves, and I'm disgusted that the government has put disarming citizens above helping them.

10. That's one of the issues.
People don't have anything to protect themselves and some places are descending into chaos.

6. Self defense is a personal problem. SCOTUS has ruled repeatedly
that government is not obligated to protect an individual unless they are in custody.

Whether to use arms for self defense and the choice of arms is a personal decision but in every case, a person should receive proper training before they decide to keep and bear arms.

12. As long as law enforcement and the military have guns...
..denying the people guns is a huge mistake.

Especially in the country we now live in, where the leadership worked to gain the absolute trust of the majority of the armsmen and continues to play with their heads with propaganda daily.

9. I just heard that police in NO are siphoning gas from cars and
so it depends on what you call 'looting'. If the cops can't keep it together then maybe the national guard should have been called up...Ooopie, they're all in Iraq.

But most will say 'it's all insured anyway' and the corporations will just write it off as a loss, and joe sixpack is going to pay for it in the end...

13. Need more gun control
They just looted a Wal-Mart of all of their guns. Why is Wal-Mart even selling guns. I don't even think gun shops should have working guns in the store.

the fact that some of us lefties have weapons is the only thing keeping us from total subjugation. Just my opinion, flame away as you see fit.

17. Reinforced. In realms without police protection, the only safety...
is in firearms ownership and the ability to use use firearms effectively. As usual, the venomously anti-gun media is maliciously misrepresenting reality: associating firearms with crime and anarchy and not with legitimate self-defense. (I'm always surprised by all the self-proclaimed Leftists who -- though otherwise intelligently skeptical of corporatist propaganda -- buy the media's anti-gun line without question. As for me, my viewpoint could be a bumper-sticker: Real Leftists Own Guns.)

:sarcasm:

The addition of (more) guns into the nightmare that is New Orleans
right now seems like a supremely dumb idea. Guns in the hands of
paniced, desparate people under extreme stress--not good.

21. Unchanged and
my opinion on the second amendment really isn't on my mind at the moment when viewing the events in NO. Why the powers that be dropped the ball even though they had a long warning time is more on my mind.

There's nothing wrong with protecting yourself, esp. in conditions like these.
