As promised, Bush inspires bipartisan cooperation
but not quite in the way he'd intended...

http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/274/oped/White_House_facing_revolt_within_GOP+.shtml

<excerpts>

...Republican senators and House members are no longer willing to take unpopular votes merely because the White House demands them. Lately the administration has lost several key votes that were billed as Republican tests of loyalty...

...At least 90 Republican congressmen of all stripes are resisting White House efforts, on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry, to block cheaper prescription drug imports from Canada...

...Conservative House Republicans joined with liberal Democrats in narrowing assaults on civil liberty and due process in the so-called Patriot Act...

...A mass bipartisan revolt in both the House and Senate will overturn the administration's proposed FCC regulations that would have made it easier for media conglomerates to merge...

I guess it was only a matter of time until the Repubs realized that Bush had duped them too. Compassionate conservative my ass. Maybe now we can drag their GOP asses toward the center for a change.

3. The Root of Republican Problems Isn't Just George Dubya
The Republican Party's troubles aren't really just George Minor's doing. The problem for the GOP is that they've allowed themselves to become controlled by the so-called "conservative movement." Even if George UU Bush goes down to a Goldwater-style defeat, the Republicans will still be held captive by a right-wing extremist block that will continue to be well-organized and well-funded and politically active. Certainly the GOP will remain strong in most of the former Confederacy as well as in Oklahoma, Idaho, and probably Kansas. These guys will continue to push extremist candidates and defeat anyone they think isn't right-wing enough for their liking.

Alas, I don't see the right-wing nature of the Republican Party as going away. Look how many pro-Slobodan Milosevic Serbs there still are in the Balkans or how strong the former Communist Party remains in the Russian Federation. I suspect that a right wing-controlled Republican Party will continue to linger for a long, long time.

5. They were riding Whistle Ass's coattails when the riding was good
But now they have to get their rides from the little people again. Poor politicians, having to work for their voters. What a pain.
