EU MUST ACCEPT some EROSION of CIVIL RIGHTS-Britain
http://www.informationliberation.com/index.php?id=1040

STRASBOURG, France, Sept 7 (Reuters) - European Union states may have to accept an erosion of some civil liberties if their citizens are to be protected from organised crime and terrorism, EU president Britain told the European Parliament on Wednesday.

Interior Minister Charles Clarke told EU lawmakers the right to life outweighed concerns over invasion of privacy and warned judges in European courts that if they failed to recognise this, the European Convention of Human Rights may need to be changed.

"It seems to me we have to give the same rights to those humans who want to travel without being blown up on an underground train," Clarke earlier told reporters in London.

"If the judges don't understand that message and don't take decisions which reflect where the people of the continent want to be, then the conclusion will be that politicians ... will be saying we have got to have a change in this regime."

3. If by erosion of civil rights
they mean more thorough searches at airports, I can live with that. If by erosion of civil rights they mean that the UK gov't can now wisk anyone away to foreign, tortuous prisons like our commander in cheif, then we have a problem!

6. It looks like option number 2, I'm afraid
The home secretary, Charles Clarke, has given a fresh warning to judges not to frustrate his decision to deport terror suspects by insisting the courts respect human rights deals struck with countries such as Jordan.

His insistence that the courts should not follow existing European case law in this area is the strongest indication that the government is serious about changing "the rules of the game" in the fight against terrorism.
...
It is expected that when the 10 terror suspects detained last month pending their deportation to Jordan and Algeria launch their appeals, the high court judges will uphold existing case law despite human rights assurances from the countries involved.

The judges are expected to say that the European convention on human rights provides "absolute protection" for those who face being sent back to a country with a record of torture and human rights abuses. Such defiance will be met by moves to amend the Human Rights Act so legal appeals by those facing deportation can be heard only in Strasbourg, not London, and no longer halt their removal from Britain.

4. Nice of a "left" party to be making such a proposal.
Thanks a lot, poodle boy Blair. :eyes:

Why just ride an underground train when you can ride an underground train AND play Russian roulette with overzealous security officers at the same time?
