BREAKING: Bush banning all media from New Orleans
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 02:29 PM by Ioo
From Americablog

Bob Brigham has just reported - and this is why we need OUR folks on the ground, to report this stuff - the military is banning all reporters from New Orleans. Outrageous. If you kill a couple thousand people, you definitely want to keep the media and the public from finding out.

Bush is literally trying to hide the bodies. This is beyond outrageous.

They're trying to hide the bodies. Who the hell does Bush think he is? So much for the First Amendment, so much for the Constitution, so much for a democratic government.

Hey, Democrats, time to speak up LOUDLY. This is what military regimes do, what dictatorships do, it's not what democracies do. We don't hide our dead bodies in our to spare our leaders their well-due shame.

I hope the media is all over this.

PS And Kyle is still on his way as our correspondent - we're not gonna let some petty dictator stop us.

they will mouthe outrage for approximately 24 hours and then they will look around at the macmansion and the trophy wife and the lexus and the vineyard vacation and go right back to the talking point memo for their new explanation of why we shouldn't ask questions or look over there.

65. But they need to keep their ratings up to keep the McMansion
and Lexus and if their ratings drop they will fight back. I was in television for 34 years and the name of the game is ratings; right now they have them, but if they can't show anything sensational, the American public moves on.

41. I bet he can if they make the right declarations
Emergency Zone...Martial Law...whatever: I'm sure that banning the press (or just getting around it by banning anyone except essential emergency personnel) is within the powers of the government. And, if not, I'm sure they can interpret the 'Patriot' Act to make it so.

I hope a few Rambo-inclined photojournalists elude the authorities in there, at least for a while. Digital camera, laptop, sat 'phone and there you go -- sure, officer, take my camera, 'cos the pictures are already on their way.

7. So there you have it
cover up Iraq and now cover up a self made catastrophe at home. Who didn't see this coming? Where are the democrats who govern that state? Where is the rest of the party? What happened to states' laws. I've been asking that since weekend. Beyond the cover-up, a city is about to be stolen from its large African American population. Is 1927 about to repeat itself?

What does the American population plan to do about this?

8. "New Orleans Police Accused of Beating/Detaining Reporters" (9/1)

"Reporters Without Borders has issued a warning about police violence against journalists working in New Orleans. According to the group, on Sept. 1 police threatened a reporter and photographer from the Toronto Daily Star at gunpoint because they were seen covering a clash between police and individuals identified by police as looters. When police realized the photographer had snapped photos, they threw him to the ground, grabbed his cameras and removed the memory cards containing about 350 photographs. His press card was also torn from him. When the photographer asked for his photographs back, police officers threatened to hit him. Police also detained a photographer from the New Orleans-based Times Picayune after he was seen covering a shoot-out involving the police. Police smashed all of his equipment on the ground."

Holed up in "Ft. Apache"? No evidence of any effort to assist citizens prior to fed arrival and not much since. Mayor wants to send them out of town for R&R. Suicides?

Has anyone seen anything about NOPD that is redeeming?

There are Blackwater down there, SWAT, NG, and unmarked FEMA...

I'm not saying that I don't believe it was NOPD, I'm saying that they may have looked like police...

But then again, it's damn hard to id people when they're beating you senseless...

49. I watched a reporter with my own eyes last week...
on wwltv.com, the local CBS affiliate in NO, tell his co-workers on camera that the NG stopped him, and told him "No reporters are allowed in NO now"... The reporter and his cameraman somehow got around this, and the co-workers jaws were on the ground.

Belive it. It's scary and disgusting, but I believe they're going to be severly cracking down on anyone who will see what happens in NO now... peace...

they are not going to stop our Vets For Peace from going in. One thing our Vets have going for them is they are military themselves and don't put up much with the BS that Bush is trying to put over on the rest of us.

The guys that are still holed up inside a building downtown are still there. A squaad busted in on them last night and they wound up being shamed into doing a sweep of all 27 floors with no elevator.

that should be blasted on every media network. Every. Single. One. They had reporters there during the hurricane, during the looting, even when it was "too dangerous" for rescues to occur, and now they can't be there?

BRIGHT GREEN BULLSHIT!

If there's really nothing there to report on, they'll lose interest and go away. You don't want them to show us the bodies? Too bad. We already know they're there. We've seen them, tastefully covered. If they choose to show them, less covered, we can choose whether or not we want to look. You don't get to make that choice for us.

23. Assuming this is true
are we sure BUSH is doing it and it is not part of the forced, mandatory evacuation enforced by the Mayor?

If it is part of the evacation, remember, the feds said they would not forcably remove anyone, it's up the state.

Now if the fed itself said no media...that's different. We should wait on the facts...

Ever since my boss told me that he is angry that people are actually blaming the federal government and how people shouldn't build on flood plains. 27. Don't know the source-website, but if this is true...
it is absolutely predictable: perfectly in keeping with what we can expect from a harshly plutocratic administration working overtime to cover up the genocide resulting from its policies of malicious neglect. I think the gloves came off with the infamous Barbara Bush remark/giggle; I think what we are witnessing in this media ban is the beginning of a rapid descent into genuine fascist tyranny.

And don't expect any real protest from the media. American mass media is part of the same corporate oligarchy that groomed Bush for the presidency and the class-warfare tasks he is now performing so efficiently and to the oligarchy's infinite delight: the concentration of wealth and the ever-more-ruthless empowerment of the wealthy -- and the reduction of all the rest of us to ever-more-frightened, ever-more-degraded powerlessness and poverty.

31. I think it may be
just as much in order to bury the whole catastrophe. TV relies quite heavily on film footage to cover all sorts of current affairs, but particularly disasters and the people they affect.

The appropriate response would be for the channels to do all they can to keep it centre stage. Maybe interviews with experts, survivors and/or family members currently living elsewhere in the US, but also in Europe and the rest of the world. Interviews abroad, generally, to sound out people's opinions all over the world; interviews with foreign aid and rescue agencies who volunteered assistance; film and interviews relating to the handling of similar disasters by previous US governments; and political and legal opinions on the whole business, etc., etc.

35. FORMER CONSERVATIVE SPEAKS OUT!
Amen Brother,
I am a former longtime member (6 years)of the conservative online forum FreeRepublic. Well,I am finished with it! I have been banned on 3 occassions for speaking my mind - because it was not what the RHINO controlled site wanted you to hear - that the BUSH administration and the party in general make mistakes. It IS true: Freerepublic appears to be a party controlled site where any conservatives that do not tow the party in ALL matters will not be tolerated. And if you do speak out against them you are soundly trounced and discredited as a 'DU lurker' or troll. This is fascism pure and simple.

In all cases I used civilized language and arguments. As a lifelong conservative I have become very disturbed with the recent road my party has taken. During the past few years I have begun to see shades of authoritarianism lurking in the shadows . . . and slowly taking prominence in the party leadership. Many of the party faithful are also becoming concerned.

The voice of liberty and individual freedom is dying in the Republican party. Will I find it in the Democratic forums? If not, where shall I go?? Please do not suggest the Libertarians, they can barely hold themselves together, lol!

NO GOVERNMENT AGENCY HAS JURISDICTION OVER THE TRUTH. I am posting this message on this board because the Feds were negligent in this recovery effort. Why did it take the national guard so long to get there?? Maybe because they are all in Iraq and the numbers we're being told as far as troop levels are lies.

Question: Was Rumsfield involved in all the false casualty reports in Vietnam?? If so, is he doing it again?

As to your question about Rumsfeld, not sure... but there are a lot of people here that have info...

I do have to say after watching Frontline's special on Rumsfeld that I believe he is directly responsible for the FUBAR mess over there. The civilians at the Pentagon, as they were called, who dictated shots against the wishes of the Generals had a lot to do with the mess in Vietnam...

 There is far greater tolerance of a variety of thoughts, feelings and ideas here than on those other boards. As long as you can tolerate being challenged with other positions and accept that we are all unique in our perspective, I believe you will find this board a healthy democratic experience. One tad of advice, at times, the human horrors and abject corruption exposed here can be overwhelming. So, be careful to avoid over-exposure to those things.

They are definitely trying to minimize this tragedy since everyone knows that the federal government was not helping people when they should have been. Worse, the so-called leaders were enjoying themselves (Bush eating cake, strumming the guitar, Condi Rice buying shoes and attending a Broadway play, Rumsfeld watching a ball game).

I fully agree with your following statement:

During the past few years I have begun to see shades of authoritarianism lurking in the shadows . . . and slowly taking prominence in the party leadership.

42. Unbelievable
This is beyond outrageous. This is unspeakably brazen and heinous. We need to email, call, and write the white house, our senators, congressmen, the news media, and everyone we know. They CANNOT get away with this. Besides, isn't the governor still in charge? How can Bush override the state government in something like this?

I'm appalled and sickened by this blatent attempt to cover up their horrendous incompetence and negligence, and to hide/minimize the true body count. Between not doing autopsies, shipping survivors to all corners of the United States, and now this, how will be ever learn the truth???

:puke:

50. They are regretting that now
They were so busy spinning Cindy's protest and doing asinine photo op's they screwed up and let the media expose what went on in NOLA.

I don't know if they underestimated the outrage it would cause or if didn't expect the media to turn on them. Either way, the initial damage is done. There are also many angry survivors out there who would love to tell their story.

52. Got a link?
Who issued this directive? Bush or someone else?

I agree that these horrors must be documented. But at the same time are people really sure they CAN look at this stuff?

If you want to see this sort of thing. Pictures from Iraq are available.

76. Bush's Ministry of Propaganda strikes again!
If they ban the press, how will Bush keep himself informed about what's going on? Afterall, Bozo Bush and his pals would even now probably still be on holidays if the press hadn't of got involved.

80. Wait a doggone minute!
Isn't Governor Blanco in control of her state? Isn't Mayor Nagin in control of NO? Bush can't do that! This is still a free country and as long as we have free speech, the bastard cannot ban journalists. Governor Blanco didn't relinquish her control for this VERY REASON. She kept control of her state...is the Idiot now a 'DICTATOR?' or what?
