Why do RW'ers hate the ACLU? |
|
The ACLU has:
Saved Oliver North from being prosecuted
Helped to defend Rush Limbaugh
Teamed up with people such as Jerry Falwell
Teamed up with RW'ers to help stop the Patriot Act
RW'ers = Ungrateful Fascists

7. Seriously, though, the Right Wing hates the ACLU because |
|
among other things, the ACLU defends the SECULAR original intent of the Founding Fathers. The Right Wing opposes the secular original intent because, while they now claim to be the sole defenders of the "Judeo-Christian" tradition, in their heart of hearts they want to return to the 19th Century consensus in which it was assumed that only Christians(read only Evangelical White Protestant Christians)were considered "Real Americans".
Were it not for the ACLU, we would be much closer to some sort of official Constitutional language declaring the US a "Christian nation."

9. Yes. And their desire for a "Christian Nation" come from |
|
their desire for fascism.
They don't even care what the values would be. All they care about is that everyone is doing the same thing as they are- outwardly- so that they can't be judged here and now.
Of course, they must know that some kind of higher power is going to beat the shit out of them in the long run.

15. No, I seriously think a lot of them are that blind |
|
Some are right on with the fascist deal, for sure. A corporatist state minus all those evil leftist naysayers is nothing but what they wish for. That's not an easy goal in a free country, of course. A few of them wisened up and realized they needed a bowl of absolute truth to gain complete control. The christian nation was ripe for the picking! Make sure to mention god every now and then, the family here and there, some 'good values' (basically, invoke the famed clinton appendage), and you can fuck the constitution over allll you want.
On the other side, a good amount of them truly believe that they know what's best for everyone. They envision a countrywide (and later, global) conversion of the people, starting with the government. They really do want the rules of the bible enforced in court (as they somehow are, as we speak). The scariest stuff is the things that they pull out of revelation, though. They see our support for Israel and war in Iraq as us protecting the jewish nation spoke of in the book. They see that as a sign of the impending apocalypse. Trying to invoke that second coming, some of the more extreme even see participating a nuclear war.
I think there's going to be shit to pay when the average christian american discovers what's been going on. If, that is, if.

14. They do believe in protecting civil liberties |
|
They just believe that civil liberties are reserved for themselves and people who are like them.
Not for people of different sex, race, religion, or sexual orientation. Not for people who don't look just like them, think like them. or act like them.
Hence they've earned the honor to be called out as the bigots, fascists and racists that they are.
And the one thing they hate above anything is THE TRUTH.

as long as you're a multi-millionaire or better, you are free. Otherwise, you're a worker drone who should 'shut up' and do what you're told.

8. They're newest mantra is they enable terrorists |
|
And the blowhards eating this crap up are the first to cry about their rights to bare arms, right to their own property, small govt, all that crap they think the Dems want to take away.
What they really hate about the ACLU is they enable truth to come out and protect even the weakest voices. RWers do not like to have the truth come out unless it benefits them.

Even I admit that every once in awhile they'll cross the line by defending an issue that is kind of ridiculous, but for the most part I see them doing nothing but defending our God-given rights that our fore-fathers spelled out for us in the Bill of Rights.

17. I find their rationale for defending pornography disingenuous. |
|
If they're going to defend pornography, go ahead. But to imply that the defense of pornography has anything to do with my rights is just disingenuous. The ACLU has a history of running to the defense of the money rich pornographers, claiming that they're also defending my rights, but this never translates to real dividends. They never have time for the little guys in everyday battles against the city, for example. So, in reality, there are no lawyers for the little guys, because lawyers really just want to make money, like everybody else.

18. Well, if you consider that the first obscenity laws passed in America |
|
the Comstock law, was used against Margeret Sanger, and her attempts to publish birth control information, you might want to reconsider your opinion.
Not that the ACLU is at the forefront of most of the obscenity cases in the US, or has been leading tha charge. About the most we can expect from them is an amicus breif.

allowing a state religion being instituted. 25. Because they are bigots. It's okay when the ACLU defends one of |
|
them because they were "misunderstood", but the ACLU mostly defends people who have been hurt by racist and sexist authorities and institutions. That's why RWingers don't like them. It's the ACLU who probably defended the right of the black family on their block to live there. They wouldn't like that at all. It was especially active in the early sixties, when schools were mostly segregated even in northern states, in getting minority children accepted into the better all white schools. Then the RWingers really hated them.

The ACLU's official position on the meaning of the Second Amendment is the "collective rights" interpretation; that the 2A has nothing to do with the rights of individual citizens.
