Why do threads dissapear

Sorry, if this question is stupid but I'm quite new here.
I followed closely the last days everything about katrina and tried to collect all the info.
But today several url of threads don't work anymore.
I suspect that they disappeared as did one or two while i was basically watching them.
Do threads disappear and if so why?

Sometimes they drop into the archives - the board moves fast these days. Sometimes they get locked because of fighting and drop like bricks. Sometimes they get deleted outright because they were started by flamebaiters or trolls.

A flamebaiter is someone who wants to start a fight. A troll is someone from a conservative forum looking to disrupt.

You'll get the hang of it. Welcome to DU!
