the world that the US was a baffling and f***ed-up place with more than its share of morons and a strong tendency toward willful ignorance. The whole Monica witch-hunt and the impeachment of Bill Clinton showed anew how insane the US is and how fundamentally dumb large chunks of its population were and are. The coup of 2000 was a natural extension of that and all that's followed has hardly been a surprise to the rest of the world.
The one different moment centered around 9/11/01, when an unprecedented level of international goodwill was for a moment directed toward the US, but the Bush junta even managed to not only destroy that but totally reverse it, and in short order. The rest of the world by now expects the very worst from this outfit...they'd be as dumb as Americans if they didn't.

Maybe it was a myth, that America could always be counted upon to take care of her own, but he destroyed it very publically. I think the concept of Super Power has been erroded. Of course it is debatable whether in the long run THAT might not be a good thing. We are an arrogant people. Humility is healthy.

Just yesterday on NPR at about 4:30pm (Central) I heard a report about how the Europeans view this whole debacle. They are, to say the least, baffled at how a "superpower" can do this to itself.
In additional to several interviews of Europeans, a sampling of European headlines was given. The underlining theme was: "The Emperor Has No Clothes." It was highly illuminating, if not somewhat embarrassing.
The report also mentioned a poll that revealed that 71% of Americans are most concerned about "terrorism," while 73% of Europeans are most concerned about global warming. The impression I got from the report is that if Americans were more concerned about climate change, this kind of thing could be better avoided.

Bush's invasion of Iraq made 'the typical American' look a bit gullible (how could people believe him), and sometimes nationalistic. Now, his entire government and party looks uncaring about anyone apart from themselves; and there's a widespread impression they are genuinely incompetent as well, and the goodwill of the non-political sections of the government just isn't enough to make up for that.
