How passed over do the other Supremes feel right now?
I have got to say that if I were one of the conservative judges on the Supreme court, I would be a bit petulant to be passed over after I handed * the presidency. There should have been a promotion in that decision and instead the job is being handed to someone they probably don't admire or respect. Doesn't Bush remember how he got to be President?

*CRASH*

4. I wonder if Scalia might just get "revenge" if he's that pissed!
By voting to support Sibel Edmonds in a couple of weeks to help us start the impeachment before Roberts can get approved!

7. Huh?
How would Scalia vote for impeachment?

The House impeaches. The Senate convicts. The CJ acts as the trial judge. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't follow this.

6. If they are aware of Supreme Court history, they shouldnt be suprised
Most Chief Justices are NOT promoted, but chosen from outside.

The promotion of Reinquist was unusual.

10. If they are cool with it then fine.
But this whole conservative take over has been about buttering each others bread, so I think there might be some huffing about it.

20. I don't think they do at all
First, most Chief Justices are brought in AS Chief Justices. The only really unusual thing with Roberts' appointment is that he was nominated to be an associate justice, then "promoted" to Chief Justice Nominee when Rehnquist died. Okay, most of the time you're only replacing one justice at a time. But it is a bit strange that he was "promoted" before he could be confirmed.

Second, I don't think they really wanted it. As an associate justice you're a bit lower profile than is the Chief Justice. This positioning lets you get away with more bullshit than you could if you were CJ.

And third, exactly how many of Bush's base is going to accept an Opus Dei Chief Justice? Two-thirds of them think Catholicism is a false religion whose practitioners are Hell-bound; how would you like a Hell-bound CJ?

25. He's a Catholic, but not Opus Dei
Think of it as the difference between a standard Methodist and George Bush.

'Course, Roberts is still going to Hell in their eyes, but Scalia is infinitely worse.

22. A young pro-corporate, anti-privacy, anti-woman, pro-fascist whore as CJ?
One who could set the agenda of the court (and thus block efforts at democratic, economic, corporate, media and civil reform) for 40 plus years?

The surviving members of the Gang of Five could not be happier.
