I hate to revisit this Houstonian Volunteer email issue |
|
but a friend asked me if there's proof that it's RW BS. I barely read the thread when it appeared here at DU and I am unable to find it through the search function.
So, please help me help my friend fire back at her racist cousin -- if you have some bullets.
Thanks!
Subject: Letter from a Houstonian Volunteer This is from a guy here in Houston that went to volunteer his time to help the hurricane victims. It is pretty sad and disappointing to think people could be so ungrateful. SO I VOLUNTEERED.......... I thought I might inform the few friends I have on my recent traumatic experience. I am going to tell it straight, blunt, raw, and I don't give a damn. Long read, I know but please do read!!! I went to volunteer on Saturday at the George R. Brown convention for two reasons. A: I wanted to help people to get a warm fuzzy. B: Curiosity.

1. I found the original on MySpace. |

It appears to be one person's entirely subjective account. The deal is, if you read the whole thing, it's apparent that he went with a lot of prejudices. He went for entirely the wrong reasons -- he wanted to "get a warm fuzzy" and he went with the preconception that these were "bad" people based on the looting stuff. He really comes off as very self centered in the thing -- he's upset because people who were fresh off the buses, fresh out of the Superdome, weren't more polite to him!!! These people were in SHOCK, most likely, and he's expecting them to be polite?
Ask DU's own Bouncy Ball to give her impressions of what she's seen at the Superdome. She's volunteered there.

2. One thing I do remember about that nonsense |
|
It talks about walking from the Astrodome to the convention center. That's not a short hike to the next building, as implied in the email. It's about four miles.
The whole email is a crock.

Yahoo maps had trouble locating the Astrodome's street. :eyes: So, this makes that email even more improbable, there being 7.2 miles between the structures. And Houston isn't exactly built for pedestrians. To put it quite mildly.

7. "As I was walking up to the Convention Center" |
|
This really doesn't imply that he walked to the CC.
