German Technisches Hilfswerk doing terrific job pumping out water in NO

They brought 10 days worth of food in case supplies are not available and a medical team is accompanying them.

“We are self-sufficient,” Büchmuller said. “We have everything with us … so they aren’t a burden and they don’t have to care for us.”

The group will bring 15 pumps, of which 10 can pump 15,000 liters – about 4,000 gallons – per minute, said Hans-Georg Hartmann, a THW spokesman. On Wednesday, U.S. Air Force airmen at Ramstein helped load the equipment onto the cargo planes, using forklifts to transport the gear from THW trucks to the plane.

Thanks to the THW's efficient water pumping system, we will soon have this:

America couldn't have done it without you, Germany. Thanks.

1. Lets hope this reverse Marshall Plan
doesn't also mean we need them to help us out with regime change, as we did for them 60 years ago.

What's America's "equivalent?" B-52s?

3. That's assuming........
that the heavily damaged levee system can hold the water back that they're pumping out. I think we're going to see failure after failure of the levee system if they don't get on top of it immediately. With the bush clowns in charge, I think the announcement of the rebirth of New Orleans is a little premature.

4. Although the media will want to be as positive as possible....
the THW know what they are doing. Germany, and the Netherlands for that matter, have top notch technology that would have prevented this disaster from happening in the first place. They really are that good. It has nothing to do with Bush, but he will exploit them for his own purposes, just as he does everyone and everything else.

6. Yes. I, too, am afraid of a re-breach
kudos to this German team for being so well-organized and prepared. Some folks in the federal government could learn a thing or six from them.

7. Germans get six weeks vacation a year...
... and they work on average fewer than 35 hours per week (IIRC), and yet they get things done more efficiently than anyone else in the western world.

It makes one wonder.

8. Right. And these guys are leaving their FT job to VOLUNTEER
their expertise for a month or more in the US. How many in the US could leave their jobs to provide volunteer service in another country for so long and still pay the rent?

13. some do
But that's not the perspective offered today.
The real average work-week is longer than 40-hours; far longer for white-collar jobs.

the Netherlands dike builders are up to the task.

The US is living in the dark ages compared to the technology of so many countries worldwide. NOT to have upgraded the levees in NO would have been unthinkable in the NL. That's why the US is thought of as backward.
