* At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes have confirmed 558 deaths.

* These numbers have been reported to state officials by local coroners.

* A breakdown of these deaths is as follows:

444 are at the morgue in St. Gabriel

Parish Coroners:

Assumption -- 2
East Baton Rouge – 53
Iberia Parish – 6
Jefferson Parish – 27
Plaquemines -- 3

* Any death that is determined to have been caused as a result of Hurricane Katrina will be counted as a hurricane-related death. For example, this applies to people who drowned as well as people who required life-support but had it cut off and died as a result when power was lost during the storm.

7. St. Bernard parish was hard hit. It's all under water, so they wouldn't

have any services/morgues available. Bodies found there are probably taken to St. Gabriel morgue, which is the main morgue set up to handle large numbers of bodies.

The parish breakdown means that bodies were taken to morgues in those parishes.

4. Didn't someone here report 400 Vietnamese dead
in a fishing village, according to a friend or relative? Was that in LA?

6. This morning when I woke up
There was a journalist there in NO. I don't remember now if this was cnn or msnbc (it was 5 a.m. or so). When the reporter in the studio asked her about the death count, she said that she doesn't understand where they get that number from. She said maybe they don't count them until they are positively IDed.

The point she was making, it seemed to me, was that the number seemed extremely low for the amount of known bodies.
