1. Ted gave 1 billion to the UN over a period of 15 years. |
|
He says he is anti-war. The US spends more on defense than all the other 190 members. 2o times more than Russia or China.
Idea that you have to give the suicide bombers hope so that they don't want to blow themselves up.

but damn, there should be more like him. When he decided to give the billion to UN, it was a third of his wealth. The US was behind a billion and he wanted to pay it and tell the US, that we owed him, like a repo man. :chuckle: He feels strongly that you have to get rid of poverty and health care problems and such because most of the people of the world want to live peacefully.

2. Absolutely. He doesn't have a great TV presence but excellent points. |
|
... I met him about 20 years ago and was very impressed...I know a lot of very rich people and he's one that did't either become an asshole because of it or -got- rich by way of being one. IMO. ;-)

This is the most that I have paid attention to him, but CNN has definitely gone downhill since he left.

edit: sitting here in the quiet of my solitary dwelling, loudly applauding his words tonite. He has pointed out the world is made up of people that want peace, referencing Gandhi, pointing out that Iraq did not attack us.

but yes, he was a breath of fresh thought for a change. Even if he was reiterating some timeless truths.

10. I saw him at a Braves game once back in the 80s. |
|
He was joking and talking to people while walking up the aisle. Reminded me of when I met Dizzy Dean at a Braves game in the 60s. Both were just having fun, talking to people, cracking jokes, and acting like regular baseball fans.

He understands how poverty leads to "terrorism."
And how education, basic health care, and standard of living affects geo-politics and war.

I think I was right about the New Mexico bison ranch. That was quite an acreage there. Nebraska is beautiful, no doubt.

Best thing is, he buys the land so that it will never be developed.
He does let people camp and fish on his land.
I love him, I hate the the RW always tells us that truth tellers are crazy.

...in a few short minutes, he hit on a concentrated number of main points (with solutions) that most Americans are concerned with.
He & I agreed on most everything 'till he said that we shouldn't go to war without U.N. permission. The Iraq war is a misadventure of the worst kind. The Afghan war had to happen (no brainier).
I can't imagine that we would have needed U.N. permission to attack al Qaeda & the Taliban in Afghanistan post 9/11.
Turner (not a gov. diplomat) could have used better language & said that we should have had the benefit of U.N. support in going to war against a country who never attacked us...
I give Ted a solid "A" on his appearance. But for the U.N. permission thing -- I'd have given him an A+.

22. Not to disagree, but one has to take the administrations |
|
official version of 9/11 to blame Afghanistan, which I thought was ok at first. One also has to discount the CIA's dealing in drugs and how well the poppies in Afghanistan are doing. You still get an A though. :hi:

23. What exactly was accomplished by the war in Afghanistan? |
|
The Taliban is still around. Osama Bin Laden is still alive. We still have a major military presence there. We are told simultaneously that huge amounts of terrorists have been brought to justice, and that terrorism is still such a major threat our entire national life must revolve around it.
Oh, and we killed many Afghan civilians in that "no-brainer" war.
I think invading Afghanistan was largely about vengence. Afghanistan was an easy target because it was a poor country devistated by years of war with Russia, and could not have mounted any significant resistance. So the Bush Administration offered it up to us as a target for our rage over 9/11.
