My Friend Called Me to Tell Me He Can No Longer be a Democrat
As some of you may know, I am the President of my local union and I am running for office in my home town.

On Tuesday night, we had a little political meeting, and my Friend and fellow union member, Steve De Marco came to show his support. He believes in the cause of Labor, and he supports me for my run for the local School Board. Not an all out Progressive, he was, however, a strong economic Democrat until this Thursday.

Check out this link: P.S Scroll down just a little

However, last night he told me he was only kidding, he's still a Democrat.

5. My grandfather once told me there's nothing he admires more than
a Democrat who gets money and stays a Democrat. I definitely think he's onto something. Congrats to your friend!

7. Luck Vs. Hard Work
A study I once heard about said that people who believe success is mostly a matter of hard work are likely to be Republicans or right leaning econonomically and people who acknowledge the role of luck are more likely to be economically liberal, or Democrat.

It seems to make sense and explain at least one reason why a lot of celebrities are Democrats. They know that not just any one can do what they do, that their talent is a gift.

8. That's a good point.
Maybe it's also a feeling on unworthiness or being blessed. Yes, my husband worked his butt off in med school and residency to get where we are today, but we remember what it was like to be really poor (I taught at a Catholic high school when he was in med school and made less than $20K a year for it).

If we ever forget just how hard that was and how blessed we were to have my mom send money every month to help us survive out of her teacher check or my dad to pay for the diaper service after our daughter was born, may God have mercy because we'll probably get struck by lightning.

We have been very fortunate, and not everyone is. It's not that we've earned this position in life but that we've been blessed.

9. Your Husband Work(ed) Hard
and I'm glad you recognize your fortune. Your husband was also blessed (by God, nature, fate, whatever) with greater than average intelligence. I consider myself pretty smart, but no matter how hard I worked or studied, I am not good enough to be a doctor.

The irony is, it sounds like you and your husband truly deserve every bit of wealth you have and don't deserve to have it all taxed away. The Repubs talk about doing away with the estate tax, taxes on investment earnings, etc. I sometimes think these taxes should be doubled because it is not money some one worked to earn the way your husband did or even the way a hotel maid does.

13. Taxes are our dues as citizens.
We don't mind paying our taxes. We get more than what we pay back in services, with great police on call 24/7, passable roads (we are in Michigan, so the roads aren't that great), and all sorts of other stuff.

We are still blessed that my husband had the chance to go to med school and residency and got a good job when he got out. I guess you could say those were earned, since he was one of the best in his residency class and worked his tail off in med school (was married with a kid and so didn't earn honors in all rotations), but we can also see how much of it just happened, fell in our laps as blessings.

I do agree that some taxes need to be raised. Our progressive system isn't very progressive anymore, and that needs to change. People who earn their money on investments should pay more in taxes than someone teaching high school (major difference in pay), if just because they've been blessed with more. I don't know why some Christians can't see that when it's Biblical.

16. Hey Louis, is your friend single?
OK, just kidding. But he'll probably be getting calls from all sorts of organizations and private parties looking to scam him out of his money. I hope he has changed his phone number and is on the lookout for the scammers and other lowlife that will probably be descending on him soon.
If not, uh, maybe you should mention it to him.

Apart from that, cool beans!! A Dem won some money and is sticking to his principles! Wow, imagine that. I like this guy already and I don't even know him. It's really nice to hear that a Dem lucked out and raked in some dough. It seems to me that more often than not, the huge lottey jackpot goes to people that are already rich and sure as hell don't need anymore money. I always hate seeing that. I'd MUCH rather see it go to, say, some guy that works two low-paying jobs in order to try to help pay his kid's way through college.

Tell your friend congrats and kudos for sticking to his principles!

20. lol!! You guys are both funny :)

Ever thought of the 2 of you having a stand-up comedy routine? :)

Does the guy have unfulfilled dreams that he can now undertake? Or do you think he will live his life pretty much as is?

22. In Reality
He receives $50,000 a year for 20 years. That's about 35K after taxes.

Life is easier for him, but it is far from being a "millionaire".

He understands that, and appreciates his good fortune, but it isn't quite as advertised.

his life Will change for the better, but he still has to go to work every day. however, the struggle of paycheck top paycheck living is over.

as i say, life is easier for my friend, but retirement is not imminent.
