Bush isn't from Texas.
Do you have any idea the huge population that lives 100 miles from the Gulf Coast of Texas.

There are lot Democrats here, a lot more everyday.

If you think the price of gas is high now, just wait.

But bush is no Texan anyway. And I know Connecticut doesn't claim him.

12. How kindly and liberal of you.
Because Bush wrongly claims to be from Texas, you're comfortable feeling as if people in Texas, whatever their political affiliation, deserve in some way to be victims of a hurricane?

That's mind boggling. Plenty of decent people in Texas. And there are a lot of Katrina evacuees there as well.

Think it's okay for people who fled New Orleans to get whacked again?

Very funny.

20. Be careful what you wish for
The odds are looking very good you will get it.

When people die from this storm, and they will, do you honestly think they will deserve to be dead due to what state they reside in? If you do, I pity you. You're hate will consume you from the inside, and you will be alive to suffer the consequences of the hate you nurture.

Sad, sick and heartless reply.

28. On September 8, 1900,
A massive hurricane slammed into Galveston, Texas. A tidal surge of some four feet in as many seconds inundated the city, while the wind destroyed thousands of buildings. By the time the water and winds subsided, entire streets had disappeared and as many as 10,000 were dead making this the worst natural disaster in America's history.

Among the dead were 90 children and 10 Catholic Sisters at St. Mary's Orphanage.
In the first floor chapel, they tried to calm the children by having them sing "Queen of the Waves”. Queen of the Waves, is an old French hymn traditionally sung by sailors during storms. The waters continued to rise The sisters cut the clothesline rope into sections and used it to tie the children to the cinctures which they wore around their waists. Each Sister tied to herself between six to eight children. They resumed singing together until the building came apart. Only three boys from the orphanage survived: William Murney, Frank Madera and Albert Campbell. Miraculously all three ended up together in a tree in the water. One of the boys remembered a sister tightly holding two small children in her arms, promising not to let go. The sisters were buried wherever they were found, with the children still attached to them. Two of the sisters were found together across the bay on the Mainland. One of them was tightly holding two small children in her arms. Even in death she had kept her promise not to let go.

http://www.1900storm.com/

Queen of the Waves
from a French hymn, author unknown

Queen of the Waves, look forth across the ocean
From north to south, from east to stormy west,
See how the waters with tumultuous motion
Rise up and foam without a pause or rest.

But fear we not, tho' storm clouds round us gather,
Thou art our Mother and thy little Child
Is the All Merciful, our loving Brother
God of the sea and of the tempest wild.

Help, then sweet Queen, in our exceeding danger,
By thy seven griefs, in pity Lady save;
Think of the Babe that slept within the manger
And help us now, dear Lady of the Wave.

Up to the shrine we look and see the glimmer
Thy votive lamp sheds down on us afar;
Light of our eyes, oh let it ne'er grow dimmer,
Till in the sky we hail the morning star.

Then joyful hearts shall kneel around thine altar
And grateful psalms reecho down the nave;
Never our faith in thy sweet power can falter,
Mother of God, our Lady of the Wave.

62. Actually, the 1900 Storm is considered a Cat 4...
Building the Seawall & raising the grade of the city behind it helped protect the city of Galveston. But it's grown beyond that area. I don't blame any Galvestonians for getting out NOW--evacuating an island is not easy.

www.galvestonhistory.org/storm.htm

The low-lying areas around Galveston Bay share the risk of storm surge. Guess where most of the petrochemical industry is located?

Houston, itself, is not as vulnerable as New Orleans. Our many floods drain pretty quickly. Hurricane winds do not cause the total devastation caused by storm surge. The winds DO take power lines down; some of our utility crews may be heading back West. (But we have "deals" with power companies in other parts of the country.)

with some very old tombstones. When we were children, our parents used to point it out to us, and tell us about the big hurricane that killed so many. They claimed that many were buried there, but that many bodies were never recovered. This was over 50 years ago.

That a cat 5 hitting Galveston would probably be a cat 2 at most by the time it got to Houston. And that's assuming a direct hit.

Especially in the more poverty-striken parts of town.

It definitely would be a one-two punch. Another hurricane is the last thing the displaced families in Houston need to be worried about. I bet they still have nightmares...

25. Houston would suffer from the storm surge via the bayous
Keep in mind what a mere tropical storm did to Houston in 2001. 22 people died and 17,000 were displaced. That was just a tropical storm w/o any storm surge sweeping up the bayous.

36. Yes, it can
I lived there for 7 years and just under heavy rain it gets bad. When you factor in the possible storm surge it could get really bad.

I called today and tried to get my dozens of in-laws from Galveston to Bear Creek to come and stay with me. Some are going to take me up on the offer, others are not sure yet.

I'm concerned, I admit it.

I'm not familiar with the topography in SE TX. I'm from Alabama, and a cat 5 hitting Mobile would be at most a cat 2 or 3 by the time it got to Greenville. But you're right. Your land doesn't rise as much as in Alabama. I'm beginning to regret starting this thread.

I agree with other folks here -- there are lots of good folks in Texas, and even if they were not "good folks" I wouldn't wish Rita or any other natural disaster on them. I lived in Texas in the mid-70's (Cow Town, aka Ft. Worth), and met lots of great people. And i visited Galveston, which I fell in love with.

I just hope to hell that Rita will somehow lose, rather than gain, strength, but with the warm waters in the Gulf, it may be a fruitless hope. I just can't stand the thought of anyone going through the Katrina-level damage, or the folks in LA and MS going through it AGAIN!

59. thanks alot "pal"
wanna come lend me a hand next week for the clean-up? beuler? beuler? thought not.

earlier this season, we got smacked by Emily...i had a tree knocked down & a power line down....minor flooding in low-lying areas because of the rain & wind damage all over town. a hit from rita will cause a lot more, & i'm over 100 miles inland.

be careful about wishing for bad things to happen to others, btw, because you're saying it's ok for bad things to happen to YOU.

69. Ya know what?

A skinny trucker in a red semi just might be there to help, if need be. Don't underestimate, or piss off, this American trucker. Not a threat or challenge, I channel my anger to positive uses. And if that use is pulling you or someone in your family away from danger or bringing in materials to rebuild you house, I'm there. You can take that to the bank. Edited for spelling.
