Bad timing for the DC peace rally this Saturday |
|
With hurricane looking like it's going to come ashore Friday night or Saturday morning, I'm guessing that most of the news coverage will be focused on the Rita. You know that this time Bush will be front and center personally fighting the evil hurricane. I'll bet the rally doesn't get much more than a brief mention.

25. Someone here suggested "Make Levees, Not War" |
|
There are all sorts of variations a person could make from that.
Any sign stressing that our country's resources (including troops) are going to Iraq rather than right here at home... for instance, a poster of a national guardsman in Iraq with the caption, "Where was she when she was needed here at home"? That sort of thing.

The rally has been planned for months now, and there was no way to predict the horrible September weather this year.
I don't see the rally, even if it attracts thousands and thousands, getting much attention by the media at all. :-(

8. Yep...you are probably correct.... |
|
They cannot have a rally and not mention the hurricane victims. They need to somehow tie the hurricanes and lack of response to the war in Iraq. Because we have our NG and our troops in a place they should not be, more of our own people are put at risk. They do need to tie the events together.

God, how I'd love to see one of those dingbats decapitated by a flying sofa cushion or something.
A tornado hits Los Angeles and a FOXNews-type reporter is out on the street reporting on it when a large piece of what looks like heavy sheet metal is blown across the landscape and takes out the reporter like a large hand slapping an insect.
It put an end to the "Oh my God...!"-style of reporting depicted in this movie.

Everyone will be following this storm and if they just break away once in while for a 10 second update the numbers that will see it are far more than on a typical week-end. No one watches TV on Sat anyway but everyone will be following Rita. I am trying to look for a silver lining

27. It all depends on the reaction by the DC police and ... |
|
whatever military they have assembled. If things are peaceful, quiet and dignified it will get some positive press. But I expect that Bush will have a few paid thugs try to make it look like things are out of control by vandalizing cars and property. Then they'll set the dogs and water cannons on the protesters. In short I'm betting on violence. Be careful out there please! And if you see someone vandalizing follow them and try to find out who they are. Get pics if possible.

Feb 15, 2003 and the people were peaceful enough for being herded like cattle until they began to break up the barriars and pass them over the tops of our heads. There were also pictures and reports of demonstrators being pinned by cops on horseback. So I think Sentinel Chicken's advice is Good!

The only barriers will be between the bands stage and the audience. It's just not that kind of protest.
Chief Ramsey only cares about Anti-Globalization protests...the anti-war activists are everywhere in DC. They practically live in Dupont Circle. They are considered peaceful and harmless.

I don't have t.v. And I'm really tired, so tired, of televsion running everything in this country.
I don't give a rat's ass if the march is covered or not. People will pay attention to what we stand for if they care, and if they'd prefer hurricane coverage and purient, voyeuristic glimpses into death and destruction, then so be it. I know, I know, some are watching because they have a stake in it. But when all is said and done, sitting on a couch watching won't faze mother nature, or change the outcome.
BUT, I am hoping that what we do and say and stand for will change the outcome -- of needless death and destruction that is manmade and CAN be changed.
I'm going. I'm marching.

The Hurricane may get a lot of the coverage, but if hundreds of thousands turn up for the march, and those hundreds and thousands then surround the white house in peaceful demonstrations, then the media will have to report it.
