Cheney: looking more and more like greedy Mr. Potter
Edited on Fri Sep-30-05 11:17 AM by Julius Civitatus
For those who don't get it, that is the evil, greedy banker from Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life." Mr. Potter, who uses a wheelchair, is the personification of greed and corporate arrogance, and in the movie his limitless greed drives the idyllic all-American town to chaos and disaster (as shown to James Stewart's George Bailey in vision of an alternative universe).

He turns the lovely town of Bedford Falls into the miserable hellhole of Potterville, where greed, poverty and crime run rampant.

Here's some visual comparisons, for your enjoyment:

Cheney today:

3. Well I do see the similarity but
I'm going out on a limb and saying of the creeps in the administration, to me he is the nicest looking man. (not talking his soul now..just features)

The recent picture of him coming home from the hospital was disturbing, though. He looked like a cadaver.

4. Nice comparison, and a bit scary, too.
But it also looks like the lessons learned from "It's a Wonderful Life" have not translated well to our society at large. It's also instructive to remember that Capra's film was widely panned at the time it came out. It didn't gain respect and status as an American classic until well after it's release.

I'd say we're well on the road to "Potterville" right now.

9. Pic #2 makes a interesting but scary threesome...
Puffalump Cheney, Pickles Bush, and Skeletor (that's his DU nickname, right?) Chertoff. I wonder what's got everybody so happy. Are these pics from Roberts' swearing-in or something?

11. Cheney is Mr. Potter!
Thank you for a wonderful photo comparison. "Its a Wonderful Life" is an incredibly political movie, really... One of my favorite exchanges between what I consider right-wing vs left-wing values is in this movie:

(Scene: Potter is trying to take ownership of the Bailey Savings and Loan Bank after Mr. Bailey dies.)
GEORGE BAILEY: ...He didn't save enough money to send Harry to school, let alone me. But he did help a few people get out of your slums, Mr. Potter. And what's wrong with that? Why... Here, you're all businessmen here. Doesn't it make them better citizens? Doesn't it make them better customers? You... you said... What'd you say just a minute ago?

'They had to wait and save their money before they even ought to think of a decent home.' Wait! Wait for what? Until their children grow up and leave them? Until they're so old and broken-down that they...

Do you know how long it takes a working man to save five thousand dollars? Just remember this, Mr. Potter, that this rabble you're talking about... they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath? Anyway, my father didn't think so. People were human beings to him, but to you, a warped, frustrated old man, they're cattle. Well, in my book he died a much richer man than you'll ever be!

POTTER: I'm not interested in your book. I'm talking about the Building and Loan.

GEORGE: I know very well what you're talking about. You're talking about something you can't get your fingers on, and it's galling you. That's what you're talking about, I know.
(to the Board)
Well, I've said too much. I . . . You're the Board here. You do what you want with this thing. Just one thing more, though. This town needs this measly one-horse institution if only to have some place where people can come without crawling to Potter. Come on, Uncle Billy!
