Holy Andy Rooney!!!
Edited on Sun Oct-02-05 07:14 PM by meganmonkey
Here he goes!

Edit to add transcript/link (Thanks Florida Pat!!):

I'm not really clear how much a billion dollars is but the United States — our United States — is spending $5.6 billion a month fighting this war in Iraq that we never should have gotten into.

--snip--

Now we have the hurricanes to pay for. One way our government pays for a lot of things is by borrowing from countries like China.

Another way the government is planning to pay for the war and the hurricane damage is by cutting spending for things like Medicare prescriptions, highway construction, farm payments, AMTRAK, National Public Radio and loans to graduate students. Do these sound like the things you'd like to cut back on to pay for Iraq?

I'll tell you where we ought to start saving: on our bloated military establishment.

(much more...)

..and old Andy has been picking up the ball lately. I just wish it hadn't taken so long, and so many lives lost -- in Iraq, in New Orleans, in despairing unemployed people everywhere. Not to rain on the Andy parade, of course!

I don't watch 60 min regularly, but decided because of Chalabi and Elian.

It's nice to hear, but I wish more in corporate media would speak out as bluntly as Andy did tonight.

13. He showed the clip of Eisenhower saying "Beware of the Military
Industrial Complex", a reference of course to Halliburton (Rooney did not say the H word) but lambasted the money being spent on Iraq. He compared military budgets of other countries, where we are 10x.

14. I'm old
And this is comparable to Walter Cronkite making his "get out of Viet Nam" statement.

I have chills. That was amazing. Even the Ike clip was amazing.

"The anchorman for the CBS evening news, Walter Cronkite, traveled to Vietnam and filed several reports. Upon his return, Cronkite took an unprecedented step of presenting his "editorial opinion" at the end of the news broadcast on February 27th. "For it seems now more certain than ever," Cronkite said, "that the bloody experience of Vietnam is to end in a stalemate." After watching Cronkite's broadcast, LBJ was quoted as saying. "That's it. If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost middle America."

59. he IS an atheist, but I doubt few fundies know this...
bits of wisdom from Andy -

Rooney also attributed voters' reliance on religion in the recent election to ignorance. "I am an atheist," Rooney said. "I don't understand religion at all. I'm sure I'll offend a lot of people by saying this, but I think it's all nonsense."

He said Christian fundamentalism is a result of "a lack of education. They haven't been exposed to what the world has to offer."

Rooney said he also could not understand how "men who work with their hands voted for George Bush," and again attributing the phenomenon to a lack of education. "The labor force is conservative," he said. "How in the world did that happen?"

60. Thanks for the link to the video
It is on too early here (in the fall and summer when I am still outside doing chores) so I rarely get to see it anymore (60 Minutes). I agree with all the comments made here about how middle of the road CBS is (look at what happened to Dan Rather), and Andy I could usually take or leave. However, when he begins to abandon his normally fluff comments (well, maybe not fluff, but not really about life or death topics) and really starts to hammer on the BLOATED MILITARY, I think we can rightfully start to believe we have reached a tipping point.
