Erm... perhaps that wasn't the best phrase to use. But this is must-see video. Both for Rooney in P.O. Mode and for Eisenhower--to remind Republicans what good Republicans look like.

AR...

------------------
I'm not really clear how much a billion dollars is but the United States — our United States — is spending $5.6 billion a month fighting this war in Iraq that we never should have gotten into.

We still have 139,000 soldiers in Iraq today.

Almost 2,000 Americans have died there. For what?

snip:

We had a great commander in WWII, Dwight Eisenhower. He became President and on leaving the White House in 1961, he said this: “We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. …"

Well, Ike was right. That's just what’s happened.

(especially by Andy Rooney, but he's usually all right if you know how to take him)

I have to pinch myself to see if I'm awake now. The nightmare may be over. The MSM is becoming adversarial. The public is taking notice. The void at the top of the government is growing.

Who's going to step in and fill it first?

BTW, the military can't protect themselves (USS Cole) they can't protecte us (9/11)and arguably, they've even created many of the problems that we face to day. There's no doubt that the money we waste on the military will create even more trouble for tomorrow.

32. And I can hear Andy saying in reply,
"I hate these new electric can openers. They never work as well as the hand held can opener I have in my kitchen drawer. In fact, I think I may have two of them. Have you ever noticed how you always end up with two or more of the same hand held appliances in your kitchen drawer? But you always end up just using one because that one is your favorite? But you don't throw the other one away."

Or something like that. I love him.

On edit: God Damn! Ol' Andy put it all into sixty unbelievably cogent seconds.

I am truly impressed. This should be shown once an hour on every television network, broadcast and cable, until enough people get it. It's even simple enough for the freeps to understand.

Famous on DU, anyway. I wonder how many heads exploded to hear Mr. Rooney lay it out so clearly just how FUBAR things have become in this country.

Five billion six hundred million? But but but, a year ago it was estimated that Iraq's cost would "only" be Four billion a month.

That whole CBS ordeal was a IntraMedia War and Karl Rove won...and Bush the Lesser won...and America lost. And they did it with the influence of Corporate CEOs and Boards...and the media was complicit. I hope we find out what really scarred/bought CBS one day.

Was that American television?!? I can hardly believe that someone was able to speak truth to power on a broadcast network.

Although, if I'd had to guess who, Rooney's just about the first one I'd think of.

37. Saw it. He was wonderful.
Too bad we don't have more than three Dem leaders who will have the courage to stand before the American public and say "I made a mistake to believe that what this administration told us about WMD and Iraq was the truth. I made a mistake in voting to give the President the authority to attack Iraq. I made a mistake, the worse one in my life and I am truly sorry for the men and women we lost to this war and I am truly sorry for all the innocent Iraqi lives that were loss as a result of my part in this tragedy. I ask the forgiveness of the American people and I call for the immediate withdraw down of our troops in Iraq. It's time to bring our soldiers home."

50. Incredible. The beginning of the end.
The gravity of this piece is tremendous.

For decades, this man has played an instrumental role as the voice for America's dissatisfied "everyman". Now this voice is speaking clearly and decisively, in opposition to the Military-Industrial Complex - to an audience who just may need a little reminder of where our priorities, as a nation, should be.

Public opinion is turning quicker than the Aspens out west.

As the indictments fall, any remaining right-wingers are going to be locked in place: immobilized; spinning frantically like gyroscopes, but gaining no ground.
