Who Is Harriet Miers?

Who Is Harriet Miers?

Bush's 'Pit Bull in Size 6 Shoes' Has Distinguished Career

Oct. 3, 2005 — Harriet Ellan Miers, 60, is White House counsel and was formerly President Bush's personal lawyer in Texas. She first served in the White House as staff secretary and was deputy chief of staff before she was named counsel upon Alberto Gonzales' transition to attorney general.

When he was the governor of Texas, Bush once publicly introduced Miers as a "pit bull in size 6 shoes."

Born and raised in Dallas, Miers earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics and her law degree from Southern Methodist University. In addition to her legal career, she served one term on the Dallas City Council.

Miers broke barriers for women throughout her career. She reportedly was the first woman hired by the prestigious Dallas law firm Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely, where she became a successful commercial litigator. She also became the first female president of the Dallas Bar Association in 1985 and was the first woman elected president of the Texas Bar Association in 1992.

Miers met Bush in the 1980s, according to published reports, and she was counsel for his 1994 campaign for governor. He appointed her chair of the Texas Lottery Commission in 1995.

10. her last contribution to a Democrat
was in 1988.

Bush gave her a job in 1994 and has donated to Repubs ever since. I think Bush bought her loyalty and she hasn't looked back since.

9. "and was formerly President Bush's personal lawyer"?!@#$%
Doesn't anyone but me find this incredibly bizarre? He names his former PERSONAL lawyer to the Supreme court? Fine - but she better recuse herself from each and every case that comes before the court that involves this administration. Gee, how would she rule on the question about whether a sitting President and Vice President can be indicted and tried of a criminal offense while in office? Read up, folks - that is an issue that could actually occur.

I think this is outrageous.

Bush appoints consigliere to Supreme Court.

16. to the nth degree!! Really rubbing the public's face in it.
This nomination should be rejected out of hand as being totally inappropriate.

Just think,if this woman was Bush's personal attorney, who knows what she was a part of and in on concerning Bush personally, both his private and personal and business dealings.

Democrats - move now! Stomp this out NOW! right this second!

The issue is not qualifications - the issue is cronyism and personal loyalties being more important than duties to the public at large.

15. More on her.....Very Interesting.
When Bush named her White House counsel in November 2004, the president described Miers as a lawyer with keen judgment and discerning intellect "a trusted adviser on whom I have long relied for straightforward advice."

He also joked of Miers, "When it comes to a cross-examination, she can fillet better than Mrs. Paul."

Miers has been leading the White House effort to help Bush choose nominees to the Supreme Court, so getting the nod herself duplicates a move that Bush made in 2000 when he tapped the man leading his search committee for a vice presidential running mate Dick Cheney.

Is Bush so lazy that he has to go the same route as the VP choice AGAIN!!!!

and

Why do I get the feeling that she would be more in favor of the State's side should she get on?

I smell a wolf in sheep's clothing here.

17. A couple of problems here:
1. No experience on the bench. Doesn't feel right for such a promotion without experience, good or bad. She's never even presided over speeding tickets in a municipal court. How is the American Bar Association going to rate a mail clerk becoming the CEO of the federal bench?

2. I get the feeling this is a Rove set-up. She will be disposed of with the proper apologies and a real unacceptable (read, fascist) nominee (with judicial experience) will be put up and fought for tooth-and-nail. Fillibuster? What fillibuster?
