"The Witch Hunt" by Bob Herbert

Excerpt:

"A friend of mine who spent some time in South America in the 1990's and who works at The Times now said, "In Argentina, friends told me how people would disappear and never come home, and their families never knew what happened to them. And — like here now — the press had no list of names, charges, etc. And I actually thought at that time of how lucky I was to live in a country where that would never happen."

"The United States is not brutally disposing of suspected terrorists and people suspected of knowing them. But it is on an incredible witch hunt, fueled, as witch hunts always are, by incredible fear. The public is predisposed to give the government a free hand in its search for terrorists. Just do what you have to do.

"But a criminal-justice club wielded without restraint is all but guaranteed to spread its own form of terror, bludgeoning the innocent right along with the guilty."

Anyone still think that having a partisan Supreme Court selecting their candidate doesnt matter?

1. I've often thought about if people were disappeared in the US
So many of us live closed off lives, separated from our neighbors & with few people that we see on a regular basis. When people were disappeared in South America, their neighbors noticed. If people were disappeared in the United States, would anyone even notice? I suppose most would be missed at work but would anyone go out of their way to investigate?
