miers was actually harry reid's idea in the first place
Galling to many conservatives is that Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada recommended that Bush nominate Miers and has praised her several times since then without actually promising to vote for her.

i knew reid had praised her but didn't know it was his recommendation in the first place. is this news or did i just miss it?

3. Yes, I remember
the news reports that said Reid had said to bush to pick someone LIKE her.

I don't know what the Dem strategy is on this one...or, is there a strategy? I don't get it either.

6. Yeah...he said "someone LIKE Harriet..."
He would know full well that Ms. Miers was working on the selection and thus would be front and center in Bush's focus...and that Bunnypants, like Louis XIV, prefers to pick courtiers noted for their family loyalty. (Of course, Louis XIV did this sort of thing with a lot more flair.) I think it's funny.

4. Well, if Harry's pro-life position has morphed into some evangelical
belief system on his own, then I'd really be worried. We don't need that leading the party....

5. maybe Harry pulled a fast one on GWB
suggesting a nominee that Bush would love but that his RW evangelical base would find unacceptable.

7. It Was Mentioned on Talking Points
Part of this falls into boooosh's weak position of trying to push through a hard right candidate over the votes of the "Gang of 14" (remember them???). While we can discuss what motives booooosh has in this pick, he tried to play Clinton in doing this. Just like how Hatch mentioned in his book that Clinton ran nominees past him and used Hatch's nod that helped get Ginsburg and Breyer through confirmation...and asshat booosh thought this would be viewed in the same way.

Yes, Reid has said good things about her...as in his dealing with her as booooosh's personal lawyer, but he has yet to say anything about her qualifications to be a SCOTUS judge or that he would vote to confirm her.

Why should he? His tactic "endorsement" was one of the first wave of Right wing jitters about her. If Reid thought she was OK, something has to be wrong. It opened the door to a bunch of scrutiny about her "background"...as well as opening up the recent wound of trust with boooosh that has fallen away in the wake of Schaivo, the Judicial showdown last spring and the Roberts nomination...the far right hasn't been happy with any of them.

I'm starting to think Ms. Miers will never face confirmation...and maybe that her nomination was a delay/diversion tactic by this regime to let the dust settle on the scandals (or so they hope) and then try to "rally the wagons" with a Janice Brown or some other real wingnut

9. What better way tro beat the nomination
than to have the top democrat say he loves her?

The Repus are out to kill the nomination just because Reid said he likes her.
