Scalia: Didn't expect to be chief justice ( And he never will be)
http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/10/08/scalia.ap/index.html

NEW YORK (AP) -- Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said Saturday that he had not expected President Bush to nominate him to replace the late William Rehnquist as chief justice.

"I'm not even sure I wanted it, to tell you the truth," Scalia told reporters at a media briefing before a gala dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan.

Bush, who had in the past mentioned Scalia as one role model for an ideal chief justice, passed on Scalia and nominated John Roberts after Rehnquist's death.

Asked if he knew why he wasn't nominated, Scalia said the reason "is locked in the heart of the president

Scalia was the only justice who did not attend a September 29 White House swearing-in ceremony for Roberts. Scalia said Saturday that he had a commitment that could not be broken.

According the Federalist Society Web site, he was leading a two-day seminar on the separation of powers in Avon, Colorado.

2. I smell the piquant odor of sour grapes.
Betcha that deep down inside his black, shriveled heart Fat Tony is on fire with fury. He's an arrogant SOB who almost certainly believed he deserved the job just because he figures he's smarter than everybody else. I will wager that the atmosphere at the court will be a tad chilly this term.

15. My old man,
who was hard-core first-generation Italian-American, was thrilled when Scalia was named to the Court. Finally, he said, one of ours makes it to the top court in the country.

Then he read about Scalia, and he was utterly disgusted.

This was the WWII veteran who quit the American Legion when they got all gung-ho about Vietnam. He had once been a State Commander, and he wrote them a letter when he resigned, telling them they were assholes.

Great old guy.

10. He is unqualified to be on the USSC, let alone Chief Justice.
Even my most conservative law professors thought Scalia was a kook.

Scalia Goes On Abortion Bender After Being Passed Over For Chief Justice
September 21, 2005 | Issue 41•38

NORFOLK, VA—Saying "Fuck this shit, I'm stopping beating hearts with my bare hands," Justice Antonin Scalia, overlooked for the vacated position of Supreme Court chief justice, went on a spiteful abortion-performing bender over the weekend. "If I'm not going to be permitted a lasting judicial legacy, to hell with law and order," said Scalia, the conservative Reagan appointee who has served on the court since 1986. "I worked my ass off for 20 years, and no one cares. So, who gives a shit? Safe, legal abortions for all. Who wants one?" Scalia added that 2000 presidential candidate Al Gore "totally won that election, any idiot knows that."

Since when has Bush done a single thing that he's promised? Justice Scalia and Alberto Gonzales can cry on each other shoulders.

19. Those kind of seminars are scheduled MONTHS in advance
and pay some really big bucks. I can believe him if he says that he couldn't (Read: It would cost a LOT of $$$$)to break the seminar to attend the swearing in.

20. I don't see the big deal
The CJ is essentially no different than an AJ, except they have a lot of administrative responsibilities for the court system that the AJ's usually don't. He also has a "better" title and I think about 10k per year extra money.

I could easily see not wanting to be a CJ, cause other than ego, I don't see that its any better of a job.
