Poverty - environment project for sustainable development
VNECONOMY updated: 11/10/2005
The UK Department for International Development (DFID) will provide 2 million USD for a  new initiative to support efforts in integrating poverty reduction and environmental protection.
The project,  referred to as the “Poverty-Environment Projectâ€? or PEP was signed in Ha Noi on Oct. 7 by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), the UN Development Programme in Viet Nam and DFID. It will be implemented in the 2005-2009 period with a total investment of 3.7 million USD.
The project will work to link poverty reduction and environment by analyzing and developing policies that effectively bring the two areas together, while working with MONRE to better coordinate donor support and partnerships. UNDP’s Global Poverty and Environment Initiative chose Viet Nam as one of only four countries in the world to pilot this programme.
At the signing ceremony, MONRE Vice Minister, Pham Khoi Nguyen said that PEP will help integrate environmental issues into policies and improve the lives of the poorest in Viet Nam, while ensuring the environment is protected for future generations.
