More on Rove-Gate

Now that it has been reported, I can add to my earlier entry ("Conyers: the stonewall" in the "politics" forum) that I, and four of my Democrattic colleagues have written to Mr. Fitzgerald requesting a report on all decisions relating to Rove-Gate, including decisions to prosecute, convictions and any decisions not to prosecute after he concludes his inquiry. The New York Times has the story.

The judicial system and the Special Prosecutor must play their respective roles in this matter, free from politics. After that, the Congress must exercise its oversight responsibilities over the Justice Department's handling of this matter and its constituional responsibilities. The public, too, is owed a full accounting of the Administration's conduct in this scandal.

Times Reporter to Testify on Recently Found Notes
By DAVID JOHNSTON

WASHINGTON, Oct. 11 - Judith Miller, the reporter for The New York Times who spent 85 days in jail before cooperating with a federal grand jury investigating a C.I.A. leak case, will testify again on Wednesday after discussions with the prosecutor about a conversation she had in June 2003 with a senior White House official. "Judy met this afternoon with the special counsel to hand over additional notes and answer questions," Bill Keller, The Times's executive editor, said in a message to the staff on Tuesday afternoon. "She is to return to the grand jury Wednesday to supplement her earlier testimony."

Ms. Miller's meeting with the prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, focused on notes that she found in the Times newsroom in Manhattan after her appearance before the grand jury on Sept. 30. She took the notes during a conversation on June 23, 2003, with I. Lewis Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff.

An entry in her notes referred to Joseph C. Wilson IV, the former ambassador whose criticisms of the Bush administration's Iraq policy had begun circulating in the capital in the spring and summer of 2003. Mr. Wilson's critique was based on a trip he had taken to Africa in 2002 to examine whether Iraq had sought nuclear material from Niger. Ms. Miller's lawyer, Robert S. Bennett, said he would not discuss her meeting with the prosecutor.

On July 6, 2003, Mr. Wilson wrote an Op-Ed article in The Times in which he said that the C.I.A. had sent him on the mission to Africa after Mr. Cheney's office raised questions about an intelligence report on possible Iraqi purchases of uranium ore. Mr. Wilson concluded in the article that it was "highly doubtful" that any sale had taken place.

1. multiple trips to the grand jury looks like obstruction of justice
the more these macaroons covered things up the more they are going down ...

Miller's miraculous memory machinations that just turned up a new notebook fails the classic "my dog ate my homework" test ... somebody's been doing some lying and it looks like they're now trying to backtrack their way out of it ...

the macro-view here, at least in my opinion, is that there will likely be a sharp demarcation between where Fitzgerald will be willing to go and where the Congress will have to carry the ball over the goal line ... until we get a good look at what Fitzgerald has, it's hard to know what issues the Congress will be facing ...

some are skeptical the republican Congress would take bush down; perhaps they're right ... but it's too soon to know this ... the country may demand it, however, if Fitzgerald's evidence strongly points at a Watergate-style administration-wide involvement ... eventually, this whole thing will be tied to the lies leading up to the Iraq invasion ... when that happens, bush is toasted bread crumbs ...

first things first though ... Rove, Libby and their little friends have to feel the heat ...

great post, Paine ... Recommended !!

3. i just wrote a post about Agnew ..
looks like the WSJ and Bloomberg are releasing a story that says Cheney is the target of Fitzgerald's investigation ...

i noted that they had to take down Agnew before going after nixon ...

always nice to think of all these fine men suffering at the hands of justice ...

5. actually ...
Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 12:26 AM by welshTerrier2
no ... i think i wrote the alliteration first ...

and the Agnew reference was only in response to the article about Cheney ...

my favorite line from "All the President's Men" was when a woman being interviewed said in a very emotional way "if you guys could get John Mitchell that would be beautiful." ... that's exactly how i feel about Cheney ... he is the embodiment of evil ...

and this time there better not be any more pardons and "we have to heal the nation's wounds" bullshit ... make them pay for their treason with life in prison ... their hands are covered in blood and oil ...

and the succession isn't clear either ... i remember reading some allegations about hastert too ... something to do with taking bribes from Turkey ... not sure where Frist fits in the lineup but he's got huge legal problems as well ...

maybe we need to declare last year's elections a do-over ... too bad they're not taking place this November, eh??

19. heh ...
just for the record, the line was actually delivered by actress Jane Alexander ...

source: http://www.actorsequity.org/howigotmyequitycard/equitycard_alexander_10-14-2003.html

She had a small but memorable role in the movie "All the President's Men", in 1976 as a disgruntled Republican party bookkeeper ("If you could get John Mitchell, that would be beautiful!")

MSNBC's O'Donnell: Rove was Plame Source for Cooper

How interesting that this story would begin breaking on the heels of the huge O'Connor story, and over the 4th of July weekend to boot...the result is that as of noon today, nothing was showing up in Google News. However, the blogosphere is definitely buzzing about it.

What is "it?" Last night, MSNBC senior political analyst Lawrence O'Donnell had this to say on the McLaughlin Group:

"I know I'm going to get pulled into the grand jury for saying this but the source of...for Matt Cooper was Karl Rove, and that will be revealed in this document dump that Time magazine's going to do with the grand jury."

That comes from Editor and Publisher, who is apparently leading on this story, given the lack of Google stories. Today a 2nd article appeared, linking to O'Donnell's blog entry this morning at Huffington Post:

I revealed in yesterday's taping of the McLaughlin Group that Time magazine's emails will reveal that Karl Rove was Matt Cooper's source. I have known this for months but didn't want to say it at a time that would risk me getting dragged into the grand jury.

McLaughlin is seen in some markets on Friday night, so some websites have picked it up, including Drudge, but I don't expect it to have much impact because McLaughlin is not considered a news show and it will be pre-empted in the big markets on Sunday because of tennis.

Since I revealed the big scoop, I have had it reconfirmed by yet another highly authoritative source. Too many people know this. It should break wide open this week. I know Newsweek is working on an 'It's Rove!' story and will probably break it tomorrow.

Well. The first thing this reminded me of was the bookkeeper's comments in All the President's Men: "If you guys could get John Mitchell, that would be BEAUTIFUL." We'll see what happens to Rove. There are some complications involved here however, that keep me from predicting any kind of colossal bringdown for the White House inner circle. First, O'Donnell says Rove was Cooper's source. Was he Miller's as well? Also, when did Cooper get his info from Rove--before or after Novak's article? How did Rove know, if in fact it was beforehand, that Plame was a covert agent? Obviously he could find out, but in order for a felony charge on outing an agent to stick, the outer has to know the outee was an agent. Finally, just because he was Cooper's source, does not mean he was specifically "the leaker." Did he learn it from someone else, like Scooter Libby? That could leave Rove vulnerable to the outing charge, but not perjury--since Rove apparently claimed to the grand jury he was not "the leaker," but could admit subsequently that he merely passed on what he heard.

13. My guess. After 7 hours with Fitzgerald yesterday, Miller played
let's make a deal and is going to sing to the grand jury today with limited or total immunity.

BTW... I love that Conyers is blogging this!!!

15. Conyers is definitely "the Man!". He gets too little recognition, even
among Progressives. Look for him to bring up the past electons after all this sh#* hits the proverbial fan.

Ask my kids who Mommy's hero is and you will hear John Conyers!
