I must confess my ignorance: What exactly is "coke jaw"? |
|
I keep seeing references to it, but I've never heard of it outside of DU.

|
it jags to the side quickly while he's talking. It's really weird looking.

17. I rarely watch him either. Links and posts here at DU started... |
|
maybe a month or two ago. When I watch the videos of him, there he is with his jaw moving sideways, usually to the left. It's very bizarre and reminds one of someone on a coke binge with all the twitches and such. What's weird is he doesn't seem to do it ALL the time. I didn't see it in the few minutes I watched of the famous Disneyland/Katrina speech, but then, I had to turn it off because he was just lying and I couldn't take it.

26. Could be a tic. It's really hard to tell, but it started recently... |
|
making one wonder what the cause might be. Could be coke, alcohol,...but like another poster said, I think anti-psych drugs are more likely. Someone I knew back in the '80s who was still on thorazine for schizophrenia did this with his jaw. He was also a coke user, but he had it all the time, even when he wasn't using.

32. Antidepressant drugs do not normally cause this . |
|
has to be long term anti psychotic meds? Maybe something he is taking for BiPolar illness? I have long thought he might be manic depressive as well as alcoholic. On top of his antisocial personality disorder.

|
There is no drug for antisocial personality disorder. Just counseling, behavior mod, and often institutionalization either through the legal system (if a crime is committed) or otherwise. For *, I'm hoping for the former.

... that occurs when you're ripped on cocaine. People who are on meth or speed also get "coke jaw."
I've seen it a lot in person... girl goes to the bathroom with her girlfriends more times than natural or necessary, comes to the bar and orders a round of tequila shots, jaw just grindin' away...
It's almost like they've got a huge wad of gum in their mouths, they way they talk when under the influence. It's hard to describe, but think about someone talking to you as if they're chewing imaginary gum. Or, just watch Bush's Rose Garden press conference. :-)

I have heard it's also a residual thing, but it's really, really noticeable when a person is presently under the influence of cocaine.

You always know who's on the blow! The jaw wag is a dead giveaway, especially to bartenders who've seen it so often they can spot it a mile away.
By the way cokies tend to be awful tippers. :-)

Okay, any post that quotes Boomtown Rats lyrics is an automatic winner, but don't abuse this knowledge.
I watched Stupidhead's little press conference last week, and his jaw was swiveling like a mechanical bull in a redneck bar. I was tipped off to this on DU, but it's impossible to miss once you see it.

I found a site where a guy who was using cocaine referred to the jaw movement as gurning. Wikipedia says gurning is associated with the use of ecstacy, and someone posted earlier today that it's associated with anti-psych drugs

I guess you've never indulged...Back in the day of my wild, misspent youth, I did indulge in such activities *gasp*. Many people who are high on coke find it impossible to NOT grind their jaw in precisely the manner that Chimpy does.

Fortunately, I'm one of those people who don't care much for the strong stuff.
Years ago I snorted some scag, and the stuff made me sick as hell. Vomiting all over the place.
My friends told me "that means it was good".
I'm like, If I have to puke to get high, I surely don't need it.
They thought I was nuts.

you also get a massively tight jaw. After a while, the muscles hurt from the strain, so you flex or open wide to counter it. That's what it looks like Dubya's doing. It's futile. You get some relief... about 2 seconds worth.

38. Cocaine torticollis (aka drug-induced torticollis) |
|
Certain drugs of abuse such as ketamine, amphetamines, and cocaine as well as commonly prescribed neuroleptic drugs such as prochlorperazine (Compazine), haloperidol (Haldol), and chlorpromazine (Thorazine) can cause acute dystonia (a lack of normal muscle control). This is a condition that involves the sudden onset of involuntary contractions of the muscles of the face, neck, or back. In addition to bending of the head to one side (acute torticollis), you may experience deviation of the eyes (oculogyric crisis) and protrusion of the tongue (buccolingual crisis).http://www.emedicinehealth.com/articles/5783-1.asp

when he couldn't stop vomiting, after a serious auto accident with internal injuries. He developed torticollis after only one or two doses of compazine. This was very severe and extremely painful, and much worse than what we see with *. But, as with anything, I'm sure there are different stages of severity.
