Who is Tweety? And other questions from a Cable Newbie |
|
I just got cable a couple weeks ago, and I am now trying to figure out 'who's who' in the Cable News world. My main questions:
---Which shows are 'news' and which shows are more editorial? Is there a difference?
---Which channel, if any, is the closest to being 'that goddamn liberal media'?
---Don't tell me how bad Faux is, that is the one thing I already know ;)
---BUT - Is it ever worth watching Faux just to find out what they are saying? If so, which shows?
- Also, I know a lot of people here said nice things about Anderson Cooper during Katrina, and he is pleasant to look at - is he worth watching? Otherwise, who are the best anchor-style news reporters?
---Other things I know - I dig Olbermann, I have been checking out his show and I generally like it. - I won't be watching all the time or anything so please don't warn me about the evils of watching too much - the only reason we got cable is because we FINALLY got hi-speed internet here and it was actually cheaper to get cable TV too for the first 6 months
Okay, any random answers to these questions or other comments about cable news would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance for your input!!!!

so-called (apparently nicknamed by his own staff) for his resemblence to the cartoon character.
Olbermann is good. Anderson is generally fair. Lou Dobbs is also very good. Uhm--you know--it's a really short list now that I think about it.

4. I Won't Even Try To Answer These Questions... |
|
In time you'll be able to figure it out. Anderson Cooper has sort of started riding his horse these days. Of course Olbermann is THE MAN, and absolutely The Daily Show!
Just a few answers, but there are so many more. I do know what you mean about the Interent thing. I have a Dish, but need to keep Comcast so I can get a good rate for my high speed Internet connection!
Gonna get you one way or another!

8. I still like Aaron Brown on CNN at 10:00, |
|
but since Katrina they've expanded his show to two hours and teamed him with Anderson, so I'm not watching as much -- too long, lots of repeated material.
FYI: Anderson's gay (I know, I know) and his mom is fashion diva Gloria Vanderbilt.
I'm just sayin'!

And if there is anything resembling 'liberal media' news on TV, you might find it on FSTV (Free Speech TV) and/or LINK, both on cable or satilite.
Also, if your TV service provides news broadcasts from overseas, they are probably worth a look.
Many shows claim to be news but most are propaganda. Keith Olberman mixes news and editorial on his program, but he does not shy away from letting viewers know which is which. A refreshing concept.
C-SPAN is great for watching various government/public forums in action and they replay things. When an event is happening, C-SPAN is a ggod bet. They show things without a bunch of talking heads telling you what to think. I do avoid their call in programs as I have untreated high blood pressure ;)
Some here watch FAUX to keep track of what they are up to. I will leave it to them to report on FAUX

13. I don't think I have the first two, but I'll check |
|
I definitely have Comedy Central, I love John Stewart, that's my favorite part of cable. I took mistermonkey to see him last Spring for his birthday. In fact, I would dump mistermonkey in a ditch for Jon Stewart }(
I just have basic, so I don't think I have any of that good looking stuff you listed..but looking forward to the Colbert Report (I love that they pronounce it like rapport - he so silly!)

You are probably familiar with it from the radio? Amy Goodman is the host and Juan Gonzales too. I like their reporting. Good solid news.

But you won't find that on the news channels, it's on Comedy Central 11:00 PM Eastern Time (I think it's an hour earlier in some time zones), Monday through Thursday only. There are reruns on this week, though. The shows are rebroadcast the following evening at 8:00 PM ET (also probably an hour earlier in some time zones).
Yes, it's a comedy show, but Jon Stewart is intelligent and outspoken and you won't regret it.

12. Don't miss the Daily Show, the best "fake news show" |
|
that consistently out-performs most of the "real" news shows.
Olbermann and Jon Stewart are my 2 favorites.

16. Advice to a "cable newbie": Stop watching cable news! |
|
It all sucks! It's not just FAUX. Basically they just exist to give a forum to political hacks to recite their party lines. There's no journalism of any kind on cable "news". Save yourself the trouble.

18. Throw out the baby with the bathwater if you want to, |
|
but the rest of us will keep watching people like Olbermann and smiling. I can't recall a time when he's allowed hacks to give their opinions unchallenged.
