Iraqi Electoral Commission to Audit Referendum Results After Finding 'unusually High' Numbers
Skip directly to the full story.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Election workers announced "unusually high" vote counts in Iraq's landmark referendum on the draft constitution, saying Monday that they will audit results showing unexpected ratios of "yes" to "no" votes from some parts of the country.

Word of the unexpected results came as the U.S. military said its warplanes and helicopters bombed two western villages Sunday, killing an estimated 70 militants near a site where five American soldiers died in a roadside blast. Residents said at least 39 of the dead were civilians.

President Bush said he was pleased that Sunni Arabs cast so many ballots in Saturday's election. Asked whether the Sunni vote would damage the political process or increase the likelihood of violence, Bush said the increased turnout was an indication that Iraqis want to settle disputes peacefully.

"I was pleased to see that the Sunnis have participated in the process," Bush said. "The idea of deciding to go into a ballot box is a positive development."

2. A 140% turnout is no small feat. When does the civil war start?
I want to have enough popcorn in the house to enjoy that show.

5. But George, they overwhelmingly voted NO
So, it doesn't look like anything's going to be solved if the constitution is ratified.
Civil war, here we come.

6. He just kicked the ball down the road again.
The real issues of what the hell we are going to accomplish isn't decided by the vote totals in a 24 hours the country IS ON TOTAL LOCKDOWN.

After all, the real question isn't whether there's ONE election. It's whether there will be two. Tyrants get in on election number one, and cancel or the rest. Civil Wars break out after an illegitimate election.

But Bush gets another week with possibilities. Hope isn't a plan.

So if forcing a country into a "free" election tickles Bush, when is Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, and China going to be forced into elections at the barrel of a gun?

12. Yes, but they probably voted against the measure, dummy.
And if they don't win democratically, who knows what the next step will be.
