Leak prosecutor to announce decisions in Washington
Mon Oct 17, 2005 6:27 PM ET171

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The prosecutor investigating the outing of a covert CIA operative has yet to say whether he will bring charges, but he has decided to announce decisions in the case in Washington rather than Chicago, where he is based, his spokesman said on Monday.

Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, who has been investigating who leaked the identity of the CIA operative Valerie Plame since 2003, is the U.S. attorney in Chicago and his staff has been tight-lipped throughout.

"If and when there would be any announcement, it would be made in Washington," said Randall Samborn, Fitzgerald's spokesman.

It is unusual for Fitzgerald's office to offer comment on any aspect of the case and Monday's statement led some observers to wonder if it might be a signal that a decision was imminent or that Fitzgerald was trying to increase pressure on potential targets to cut a deal.

2. Someone probably wanted to write
a news item that actually came from Fitzgerald's office since so little has come from Fitz.

4. Yeah, but does it make a difference if he announces it in Chicago
or DC?

3. Because it is so unusual for Fitz to offer any comments...as per
the story!

5. Maybe because if he planned to just issue a report
exonerating the targets, he might want to announce it in Chicago in order to downplay the announcement. But, if he plans to either issue a report that is inconclusive and asks additional questions, or request more time for the investigation, or announce indictments, he would probably prefer to do so in Washington, D.C. I could be wrong on this -- very wrong. I'm just saying what makes sense to me.

6. Political announcement unveiled at the scene of the crime? To the
national political press?

7. EXACTLY. It's like your doctor calling you ...

If the nurse calls, the test was negative.

But if the doctor calls, it's bad news.

He could say NO INDICTMENTS in Chicago. I think it means he's coming to the seat of government to make these serious charges. Fitz is a prosecutor who has to see this as the outing for political reasons of a person who is part of the true thin blue line we have protecting us internationally. They tried to destroy Valerie Plame because she did her job, and because her husband did his.

I'm expecting many counts, maybe more than the 10 I predicted.

9. Grand jury decides whether or not to indict and it's in DC as is the
investigation. As Special Prosecutor for the Plame investigation, Fitz's workplace is DC.

As announcements go it's not a really news. But perhaps a way to rattle a few already shaky cages.

8. I would NOT want to play poker with fitzgerald.
this guy is crafty.

no matter WHAT he is actually going to do, he's going to have the republicans more twitchy than a long-tailed cat at a rocking chair convention.
