A third-rate smear

There are many of us here who were alive and well during Watergate. George Bush was, too. So was Cheney. And Wolfowitz, and Bolton, and Rove. They saw it happen, and in some cases had front row seats, but they were sure it would never happen that way again. No, when they did it, they would do it right. There would be no cover-ups, you see, because the plan would be perfect. All the ducks would be in rows –perfect rows – and everyone would have alibi after crosschecked alibi. Niger would be a soft landing spot for the uranium –hell, half of America doesn’t even know it’s a country – but it’s in Africa and that’ll work just fine. Oh, it was all so right, until somebody let that CIA broad’s husband up for air.

This go-round, John Mitchell was played Alberto Gonzalez, while John Ashcroft played Chuck Colson. Karl Rove played John Ehrlichman (when he wasn’t playing Adolph Eichmann), and H.R. Haldemann was brilliantly portrayed by Scooter Libby. Spiro Agnew IS Dick Cheney, and Judy Miller attempted to play Rosemary Woods, but she screwed it up. I mean, c’mon, how hard was it? We have shredders now, you know? Joe Wilson was brilliant as the latter-day John Dean, while John Roberts and John Bolton headed the 21st century plumbers, this time making their initial appearance banging on a door in Florida. Since this entire administration operates under the Peter Principle, they are both now in positions thousands of miles over their heads. George Bush played God, and G. Gordon Liddy played all twelve apostles. The American people portrayed The Enemies List.

It is so eerily similar to what happened over 30 years ago, and we can give thanks to a Republican Party that perpetually over-reaches for the bounty that we have before us now. Those of us that went through this before find ourselves watching with deja-vu eyes as we see the same lame denials, the same shifting of blame, the same “we have work to do to lead this country” mantra that spewed out of Ron Ziegler way back when. We see special prosecutors connecting the dots, while right-ring radio (known last time around as The Silent Majority) tries desperately to put out the fire.

What we don’t see, however, is what still keeps us talking in hushed tones, and not screaming from the rooftops. We see, as of yet, no Sam Ervin taking the case to America in a folksy drawl and making it plain to everyone that something very, very wrong is happening in The White House. We see no politicians speaking what they surely must be thinking, and we know that this must happen for the truth to come out. We see no one in the halls of power pointing out the naked Emperor, and we know they must at some point place country over comfort and speak out. We see, as of yet, no mainstream newspaper latching on to this story, and not giving up until the truth splashes across the pages. We see pieces of light, but until the floods are turned on full we watch and wait. We cannot win without them.

If it happens, be assured of one thing. Be assured that what happened at that District of Columbia hotel is happening again, and that the results no doubt will be just as gratifying. Be assured that after all these years somebody somewhere gets it, and that no amount of No-Spin bullshit will wipe away the stench that covers us all. While we wait, keep the heat on the cowards we elected and hope that the coal-black pressure will turn one into a diamond.

Until then, just ask Ronnie what to do.

Trust, but verify.

1. What they did was have their cronies buy up most of the media.
But, sometimes the cameras can't lie for you.

And some things, like treason, are hard to spin, so the media refused to cover the treason for the entire year before the election.

2. We may have a Judge Sirica already in this case.
A compilation anyway. The judges that agreed with Fizgerald that this was a national security issue and allowed Miller and Cooper to be sentenced to jail.

Then there is Don Bartlett as Patrick Buchanan writing prose to try and rescue the man. (I was a kid during watergate, but it fascinated me).

Excellent Post DancingBear! :yourock:

3. John Dean has known all along.
And having "been there, seen that" he would be amoung the ones to know best.

He even titled his book "Worse Than Watergate".
