Where was hip-hop in the 'foremath' of Katrina?
"...Just as international news disappeared from the airwaves in the days leading up to Sept. 11, issues related to the poor did a similar disappearing act in the years leading up to Hurricane Katrina. Politicians rarely discuss the poor, and the media rarely call them to task on it.

During the 2004 presidential debate, Yalie Bush and Yalie rival John Kerry devoted a scant amount of time to talking about issues of poverty. Only marginal candidates such as Al Sharpton, Dennis Kucinich and Ralph Nader spent a significant amount of time talking about the poor. It's an indictment of hip-hop that I could swap the names of Sharpton, Kucinich and Nader with those of rappers Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots and Mos Def, and the previous sentence would still be true..."
