http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Reid_takes_Senate_into_closed_session_1101.html

Reid wouldn't do this just to ask questions. Frist would have everything back on track in 30 seconds. Reid HAS SOMETHING BIG! He's telling, not asking.

Let’s take a look back at how we got here with respect to Iraq Mr. President. The record will show that within hours of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, senior officials in this Administration recognized these attacks could be used as a pretext to invade Iraq.

>snip<

We demand that the Intelligence Committee and other committees in this body with jurisdiction over these matters carry out a full and complete investigation immediately as called for by Democrats in the committee’s annual intelligence authorization report. Our troops and the American people have sacrificed too much. It is time this Republican-controlled Congress put the interests of the American people ahead of their own political interests.

He could even be blowing the lid off LIHOP (or worse) right now if you read between the lines.

Cheney??

They all need to go. Perhaps Fitz doesn't know how to indict a sitting VP or Sec. of Defense

There's an investigation going on in Italy right now- the truth will out eventually - they can't stifle an Italian investigation.

9. Not to burst any bubbles...
...but it could just be laying the groundwork for the mid-term elections. That would be good, too.

OTOH, that seems somewhat unlikely to me given the action he's taken. So perhaps he IS onto something big.

I just read the unofficial transcript that was posted and I do now think that there is something larger at work. I don't know if he has something on the bastards or he's just plain had enough.

But as we used to say in the 70s, there's some shit goin' down somewhere.

it's a gutsy, gutsy move....and I'm proud of him for doing this. We needed an act of defiance in the wake of the Libby indictment to show the Repubs that times have changed and we're not going to let them step all over us anymore.

Nicely done Senator Reid. Nicely done.

22. Only takes a majority vote to reopen for business as usual.
There is just no point in Reid doing this with no followup. He has to have something big and unanticipated enough to keep the doors closed for a while, or he ends up looking like a monkey.

32. Why do you think that in particular?
I mean, I don't doubt Fitz has chapter & verse on Cheney, but why would Reid do this in the way he's doing it? Wouldn't he let Fitz name him as an unindicted co-conspirator first?

37. A number of reasons.
And those reasons include, but are not limited to, the following:

Reid is a rather conservative fellow. He would not be doing this now, unless he was aware of something very large. Note that he quotes Cheney about Iraqi nuclear weapons. Count the quotes, and consider Cheney's assertions.

Reid also speaks about the manipulation of intelligence. Those who were afraid to speak openly about the aggressive stance Cheney and Libby took at the Agency, especially after seeing their attack on Wilson, have provided information to some members of the intelligence committee.

Just as Libby has been called the "firewall" protecting Cheney, we might consider the vice president at risk of being one of the smaller back-fires set to stop a dangerous forest fire. The Agnew model should serve us well in our examining this concept. Those who have stepped in to help Curious George recognize that he has to cut the VP. He needs the distance. They have lap dogs like Dick Morris writing op-eds that are pointing the finger at Cheney.

38. My initial thoughts about Reid were also that he wouldn't do this
without having something in the bag, but I expected him to do a dump in the closed session, and the way the afternoon developed was not in my mind suggestive that he really had anything ready to go. Of course he could always be playing rope-a-dope with Frist, getting the Good Dr. Mengele & his minions to overextend himself before dropping the bomb....

39. Cheney & Libby
reportedly held back documents they were requested to provide to the committee. There was a report that they went against the advice of aides and attorneys. That was a serious error. It is one of a few.

Who else thinks the Dems have a smoking gun, or two or three?
Maybe in that closed session they pulled out pictures of said weapons and told the Rs to not try anything cause there are other copies out elsewhere and several people know about them.

43. I'm wondering if Reid was just trying to regain the offensive
It would be a feat in and of itself if Reid and the Dems can just continue to keep the White House on the defense. This move has the effect of notifying the White House that the Dems aren't lying down, that the WH can't control the agenda, that the Dems have maneuvers of their own to fight back and they will use all tools.

Besides the topic is solid gold. The Dems can't lose at this time in history by taking the position that the pre-war intelligence must be examined as a huge part of the unseamly underbelly that was just exposed by Libby's indictment. Perfect timing.
