Culture of Corruption: Rummy's making million$ on bird flu scare.
Fortune magazine is reporting that Rummy holds "between 5 and 25 million dollars" stock in the company that holds the patent on Tamiflu. The company whose stock went up 30% following a $58 million order from the Pentagon.

1. He has stock in Roche Labs
The ameircan company has not had the patent licenced yet,

Oh and check this, from the WHO

http://www.who.int/csr/resources/publications/influenza/WHO_CDS_CSR_GIP_05_8-EN.pdf

Is the WHO part of the scare?

you may do well to EDUCATE yourself and differentiate betweeen the science and the hype (which busbco is pushign for other reasons, can you say martial law? I knew you could)

3. Actually, it's Gilead - Roche is a licensee.
But Gilead gets 10% of every order; e.g. 5.8 million when Rummy ordered a batch for the Pentagon.

And yeah, Bush is not being very subtle about his desire to use the flu scare as an excuse for martial law. We need to impeach him and fast.

5. That's correct
Gilead gave up its marketing rights to Roche.

Rummy was Chairman of the Board at Gilead from 1997-2001.

Don't forget his position at Searle- It's all connected.

Rummy has a enormous fortune invested in pharma stocks.

He's a psycopath.

6. hmm Gilead is gettng the licence
and will build a plant in the states

Tamiflu is made by Roche, they did the research

http://money.cnn.com/2005/10/27/news/international/roche_tamiflu.reut/

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/20/AR2005102001139.html

Now that said, I don't doubt Rummy is looking for a bidness oportunity, but the bird flu is real and so far it has killed 122 people... it has NOT made as of yet an efifient human to human transfer.

This is PER the World Health Organiation.

Try to separate the hype from the bush administration (their plan will make many a developing world country look stellar), from the reality of it ok.

16. 122 people worldwide is NOT an epidemic. or even cause for alarm
complications from the common cold, or allergies to asperin probably kill more people.

19. Once it makes the jump to human to human transmision
Edited on Thu Nov-03-05 01:58 AM by nadinbrzezinski
I am sure you have heard of patient zero... if that patient infects enough folks, who get on international flights, you will have multiple clusters

1918 started with 20 troops who were sick... tell me exactly where that ended, and the world was far larger, as in travel times were far longer.

Epidiemology 101, once you get your clusters infection rates from host to new host become exponential... hence epidemic... thuis is why it is critical to isolate those patients and those clusters

i guess i get so overwhelmed with All This Stuff Over Here and don't think I can handle anymore.

At this point the bird flu seems so far away. Partly cuz i want it to be. I just spent all this time learning about how government works... finally! And now i gotta look at biology?? Oy. I should have just waited to go to high school til now....

30. Information is power
now if and when the WHO issues any kind of advisory on human to human transmision, time to get a tad worried...

If they do, and they are able to produce the vaccine fast enough and isolate clusters before it goes exponential... we will do well. That is the operative word.

If

That is why China bothers me since last year they actually hid SARS..

Just pay attention, and separate the hype from the facts... you will be fine... and if we should have a bad flu season staying away from crowded spaces or staying home when sick is still a common practice, bird flu or no bird flu.

:-)

31. No, Gilead is a small biotech company that developed it.
They are involved in a dispute with Roche right now because they don't feel Roche has marketed the drug well enough, ramped up production quickly enough, etc.

The part that pisses me off (apart from what in my opinion is partially hype about the scare) is Rummy's ordering the Pentagon to buy the product. Conflict of interest, and also Tamiflu is useless against the H5N1 strains isolated so far in Viet Nam.

Edited on Thu Nov-03-05 01:33 AM by nadinbrzezinski
and his hype and the science

This is real... it can happen this year, it can happen next year...it is like preparing for a hurricane... most of the time it seems like it is overblown to you... but every so often the law of averages catches up.

1918 is just the best known case.... but so far we have 122 people dead...

war dead from Bushco and his illegal war - I'm much more concerned about that, than I am with this Avian flu scare. And the total deaths from Avian flu world wide so far, are a far cry from the epidemic of 1918. Google WSWS.ORG for a GOOD article on this whole Avian Flu scare. Just an excuse for the Bushies to declare martial law.

17. As I said learn to distinguish
one thing is what bush and cronies do or say, another what WHO says...

What should you do?

Keep an eye on WHO

DON'T PANIC (but that one you are in danger of becoming a flat earther)

Make sure you wash your hands this winter, no, not bird flu, just your garden variety flu

Keep your eye on the ball

And I will remind you, the 1918 Epidemic started at Ft Riley KS... with what epidemiologists call today Patient zero, and a small cluster. If the army had listened to the Medical Corp, the 1918 epidemic might have never happened. What was their recommendation? Quarantine the fort.

Now I understand you are going, but SARS... only reason why it did not become a larger crisis and WHO has been trying to get gov'ments to take this seriously since 1995, was the people who needed to pay attention did. You might remember that they issued a travel advisory for Toronto that lasted five days... best case... everybody who absolutely has to pay attention does, and they find Patient zero, and stop it... before it becomes a real problem... and like any hurricane people will scream why should I listen? Katrina should be a good reminder for you on the laws of averages.

As to the war, I can multi task and pay attention to more than one thing at the same time. Why can't you?

22. So you think the WHO is in their pocket
let me tell you something, this is amazing planning on the part of the WHO for their first warnings started in... drum roll 1995... it has taken this long to get the US government to even start paying attention. Well actually the CDC under Clinton was... but these boys... their plan flies in the face of recommendations by Epdiomologists...

Take it for what you want... but this discussion is over... there is no amount of information that I can give you to prove that this is not hype (just how bush is handling it, that is the hype, and bad hype not to mention terrible planning which is on purpose)

I'd rather educate people so they can distinguish the hype (and there is plenty from the US Government) from the reality... but I see I cannot be rational with you, so this conversation is over. (And if and most importantly WHEN the real deal shows up, you cannot claim that people did not attempt to educate you, operative word, attempt... yuo should be happy to know though that our chances are slightly higher than they were last year, but not much higher yet... they will increase as the virus mutates)

Several provinces. Seven hundred something birds with I think 24% testing positive for H5. Still waiting to see if it is the H5N1, which if they tested these birds in Aug they should already know....
I have two chickens in a huge pen outside which are pets but the thing that I am most worried about is my African Grey. He is my baby and is eight years old. I would hate for anything to happen to him.
