Three U.S. Soldiers Killed in 24-Hour Period



BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi guerrillas ambushed a U.S. military convoy northeast of Baghdad Monday killing one American soldier and wounding two others, the U.S. military said. The death brought to 97 the number of U.S. soldiers killed by hostile fire since President Bush (news - web sites) declared major combat over on May 1. The soldier was the third to be killed within 24 hours.

As of Monday, Oct. 13, 326 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq, according to the Department of Defense.

The British military has reported 50 deaths; Denmark, one; and Ukraine, one.

On or since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 188 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, according to the latest Defense Department figures.

Since the start of military operations, 1,498 U.S. service members have been injured as a result of hostile action, according to U.S. Central Command. Non-hostile injured numbered 333.



The latest deaths reported by U.S. Central Command:
* A 4th Infantry Division soldier was killed Monday afternoon when a rocket propelled grenade struck an armored vehicle in Tikrit.

* A 4th Infantry Division soldier was killed Monday morning when a convoy was ambushed southeast of Jalyula.

* A 4th Infantry Division soldier was killed Sunday evening when an armored vehicle struck a mine northwest of Bayji.
