As of Today, the US government may be tracking you at DU!!!
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 01:29 AM by sleipnir
http://slyck.com/news.php?story=990

"Federal Communications Commission issued a final Order effective Monday November 14th compelling all broadband Internet service providers and many Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, companies to include backdoors allowing police and many other enforcement agencies to directly eavesdrop on their customers by April 2007."

"This move supplements and updates the 11 year old Communications Alliance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), which dealt with the issue of wiretapping on telecommunications carriers, and addresses the concern that emerging technologies such as VoIP, IM and Emails all lie outside the scope of existing legislation."

This is very real, and very scary. Yes, as of today, the Federal Government has the right to look at what websites you have viewed and what you have done. In fact, it's possible to start cataloging what you've written at DU. I write this now, and the potential exists that it will now end up at a government database with my name, address, phone number, all integrated with other files involving all the data the government may have on me, if my ISP is willig to follow these orders issued today. Yes, they have about 18 months to fully implement this, but that's not to say anyone is going to be ahead of the game for "National Security Reasons."

TODAY!! MONDAY!! MAY I BE THE FIRST TO WELCOME YOU TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER!! ENJOY OCEANIA, WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH EURASIA.

He's been there about three weeks now.

I looked in the back of the van and there's no apparent monitoring devices so I'm assuming it's not theirs.

Nevertheless, it'd be nice if somebody towed it and it DIDN'T get traced back to me.

The guy's got a bit of a temper.

12. It's still such a shock to me
That ANYONE, let alone members of the party who not that long ago trumpeted their support for freedom to go against everything this great country stands for and take away the freedoms that we deserve.

They call us unpatriotic? What's unpatriotic about loving America and wanting our freedoms and our way of life to remain intact? You don't hurt the terrorists by taking away the freedom of ordinary Americans. In fact, the terrorists probably LOVE that.

George W. Bush: He hates us for our freedom.

If they want something on the record from me, here it is:

I love America and I would never do anything to cause this country harm. That is why I am sick of unqualified, immoral, unAmerican people running it and attempting to make it unrecognizable as the beacon of freedom it has always been.

Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 02:09 AM by DanCa
I will proudly show them the true definition of being American is embracing liberalism. So I will proudly fly my American flag and I will show them just what a true american is.

One who will fight for the rights of everyone not the spoiled rich.
One who fight for the rights of the old people on social security
One who will fight so that this great land isn't polluted
One who doesn't want to see another young man die in a needles war.
One who wants to honor the constitution when it comes to roe v wade and a true american will not take away the rights from gblt people.

And I hope that they will monitor me in church.

And I will humbly show them what it means to be a christian.
That true christians dont torture. That they don't slander veterans, and that Jesus would want to see that the least of us is taken care first. That true christians dont fear but embrace science. And that we want to heal the sick through stem cell resarch.
And that true christians dont need to ram religions dogma down others, and not legislate from the pulpit.

Yes I want them to monitor me because I want to show them that being a Liberal is the true definition of an american. And as a christian I want them to monitor me because I want them to learn that Jesus is not some xena-esque god of war madness riches and embryos.
And I want them to monitor me because I am mad as hell and am sick of them and that I want my country back.

20. I assumed that they were following this site all along...
...and it shouldn't be too hard to figure out my identity.

At any rate, I'm not concerned. I'm doing nothing here but exercising my First Amendment rights. And I'm sure they could find out more than enough about my views by simply checking out my LTTE, as well as editiorial columns I wrote for a Greater Boston weekly when I was younger. Not to mention my appearance on KOMO-TV news the day before the 2004 election.

So, they know I'm opposed to this administration. Big deal. If they want to start "disappearing" Bush opponents, they're going to have quite a job on their hands, since they'll have to round up about 55%-60% of all Americans, according to recent polls.

They wouldn't "disappear" everybody who said "I don't support Bush" in a poll. They would "disappear" the more vocal opponents.

In other words...

Anarchists
DUers
Vermont Separatists
The entire town of Provincetown, MA
Most of San Francisco

The list goes on.

52. What's to fear?
I won't let paranoia creep into me.

I visit only DU, my blog, a technical forum, a sci-fi forum, my commercial website. The occasional sundry website.

I play online games too.

In all seriousness, I'd be more concerned about drinking past-due milk than this.

Okay, who isn't concerned just a little? But don't get paranoid so badly that you see menace in every shadow.

The internet is an open entity. I've presumed that at some point, we've all been looked at. We're all still here and the sky has not fallen.

Eurasia?

Maybe England. I grew up watching too much PBS. People think I'm a weirdo because of British traits I picked up on. And as you well know (I hope!), doublespeak and double negatives are two traits the English freely enjoy. :D

72. This seems to include listening in on phone calls (with VoIP)
I've been wondering about the huge rush of VoIP phone service ads. I've been inundated with offers from Comcast, Vonage and other companies that don't come to mind right away and I admit, I have been tempted to change our home service.

This news makes me think twice, in particular the last paragraph of the linked story:

-----------------
Coming on top of our report that the EU now plans to compel all ISPs throughout Europe to keep records of internet activity for 12 months, with telephone records being retained for "at least" 6 months, this is a troubling – if not entirely unpredicted - development for those living in the USA.
-----------------

Are they talking about retaining the records of what calls were made and received (numbers only, like the police can get now from the phone companies) or the actual conversations (like they do with e-mails)?

Article about EU "retention plan" is here:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/10/07/weu07.xml&sSheet=/news/2005/10/07/ixworld.htm/

Actually, I assumed they were monitoring digital communications all along. It's not that hard. In fact, it's much easier than tapping conventional phone lines.

Just because it's illegal, doesn't mean the NSA and Mossad aren't doing it. Who knows for sure? Only God knows everything and he works for Mossad.

It's good to know the government has the time and resources to watch citizens who think Bush sucks.
