For Bill O'Reilly, I only have two words: Flight 93
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 06:39 AM by sfexpat2000
Bill,

You say you stand by your word because you're a New Yorker who lost New Yorkers on 9/11 and because this is "serious". Because recruiting our kids to go to a misbegotten war in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 is serious?

I'll get serious with you.

I remember Mark Bingham if you don't, O'Reilly. I remember that field in Pennsylvania that took a hit so that D.C. would be spared.

You want al Qaeda to bomb Coit Tower, our San Francisco monument to the BEST FIRE DEPARTMENT IN THE WORLD? I object to that.

I object to you using the public airwaves to call down harm on an American city and its 100,000 children.

I object to your disrespect of the heroes of Flight 93.

I object to your interference with our lawful elections, with our community decision to keep our schools for learning, with your disrespect to our veterans who risked everything for this country.

Most of all, I object to your anti-American intolerance, to your careless resort to violence, and to your disrespect for the public trust. The airwaves belong to the American people and they will not be used against an American city.

You have refused to retract your call for a terrorist attack on San Francisco. I'm glad that's on the record.

You're either with us or, you're with the terrorists. Now, America knows where you stand.

Email O'Reilly's sponsors: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x5340763

Email his show's distributors: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x5340763#5342813

Email the FCC: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x5346941

In memory of Mark Bingham and all the San Franciscans who gave their lives on 9/11. We will NEVER let anyone forget you.

DU, please step up. We cannot let this stand. We will not.

Furthermore Mr. O'Reilly has neither recanted nor apologized his obscene outburst.

25. You inspired me to write the FCC
Here's my letter. Sorry it's so long--there's too much to say!

Dear FCC Commissioners,

For a long time I have been worried about the increasing use of the nation's airwaves for the broadcast of extremist "shouting heads." It would be one thing if these people controlled one or two stations in a widely diverse market. Unfortunately, they have become the norm, blaring their message from coast to coast with no competition from, say, a modern day Walter Cronkite or other voice of reason. As a few radical personalities become more and more powerful, they take more and more liberties with incendiary speech.

The shocking call by Bill O'Reilly for a terrorist attack on San Francisco is only the most recent and widely-publicized example. Two weeks ago, I was astonished (and appalled and frightened) to happen upon the Mike Savage Show on a Dallas radio station (KSKY 660). Mr. Savage spent the entire twenty minutes I listened calling for the incarceration in internment camps of any and all American citizens who dared to question the Bush administration. The callers to the show expressed their seething hatred for ordinary people, and Mr. Savage egged them on. For the first time in my life I realized how easy it would be for this country to devolve into mob violence, and the biggest reason would be the hate-mongering of these radical broadcasts.

Am I wrong in thinking that there are noble uses of our media that would actually help to preserve democracy rather than to destroy it? Where reasoned debate could flourish and mutual understanding take place? Where true investigative reporting could expose corporate and governmental malfeasance to public scrutiny? When I ask these questions, people patiently explain to me that sleeze and us-versus-them programming is what makes money, as if this is a reasonable answer to why our public policy is more concerned with making Rupert Murdoch rich than it is with making average citizens informed.

While there are alternatives to the mainstream media, they are hardly as ubiquitous as broadcast radio and television, and they require specialized equipment--computers and internet access, for instance. Most people still look to the main stream media for news, but what they are getting is no longer news. If it isn't a twisted form of opinion, it is non-stop coverage of some high-profile murder or some other sort of entertainment that gives consumers not a shred of usable information when it comes to holding their government accountable, which is, after all, the only meaningful purpose of a free press.

As the guardians of our public airwaves, it is your privilege and challenge to make sure that the media serve the public, and by this I do not mean catering to the public's baser instincts. The hate fests that pass as opinion radio/television are no better than pornography, and their broadcast should not be a legitimate use of the public licenses by which a few media moguls are allowed to get rich.

When the conglomeration of media outlets hands the megaphone to a few corporate insiders, it is no surprise that editorials are standardized and news stories selected with the intent of perpetuating policies that serve the monied interests of media moguls and advertisers. For instance, when is the last time you saw any mainstream stories on the negative impact of media conglomeration? The public airwaves are being used to keep important information out of the hands of voters. The system needs to be completely restructured. Please let me know what your agency plans to do to correct these fundamental and important problems. The future of our democracy is in your hands.

Sincerely,

I've supported Boxer, Feinstein, and Pelosi since their City service and Board of Supervisor days.

San Francisco is the Jeffersonian definition of patriotic.

Bay Area Washington politicos need to make a public statement and follow on with an investigation regarding O'Reilly's terror-mongering o'er the airwaves...this must not stand!

36. Boycott all O'Reilly sponsors!
IT is practically a requirement of listening to O'Reilly that you subscribe to his list of "unworthly" who should be boycotted. It seems only logical that anyone who disagrees with O'Reilly should boycott those that support him.

Take this boycott to the larger universe, have your friends take part, force the money behind that lout to consider the consequences of supporting such a dangerous extremist.

As O'Reilly himself would want it to be, so shall it be, boycott his sponsors.

I'm a San Francisco first responder...and I think I'll send this thread to the Mayor's Office, and the San Francisco Emergency Response Team organizers (the program is Fire Dept.- and Police-centric.)

I like the spirit. :)

67. I had no idea that Coit Tower was to honor fire fighters
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 01:51 PM by scarlett1
I found this on "Bay City Guide" it tells the history.
People should know O'Reilly is disrepecting our great fire fighters.

Coit Tower
Atop Telegraph Hill is the 210-foot Coit Tower, built with funds left to the City by philanthropist Lillie Hitchcock Coit for the beautification of San Francisco. Due to Coit's admiration for the fire fighters who fought the 1906 earthquake fires, many believe the tower was designed in the shape of a fire hose nozzle. The view from atop the east side of the tower spans 360 degrees. Inside, you'll find a history museum and murals that depict working life in 1930s California. From the tower walk down the Greenwich Steps to Montgomery Street. At Montgomery Street, turn right to catch the Filbert Steps which lead to Sansome and Filbert streets, a short distance from the Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf. The steep walkways pass beautiful cottages and private gardens.

added on edit a srory from a local TV news report on reaction in the City by the Bay

... who should be locked up. Honestly, if any other public personality made a remark encouraging a terrorist attack on an American target, O'Reilly would be the first one to accuse that person of treason. He has truly gone too far this time. His sponsors and superiors have a responsibility to the public.

I'll never forget how angry I was when they refused to bring Bingham's lover to speak before Congress the way that what's-her-face, widow of the man of the ever-famous "Let's Roll" was trotted out.

Absolutely disgusting that the widow of that man gets to speak...but the bereaved lover of Mark Bingham gets no mention of any kind!

I was spitting mad over it back then, and time hasn't changed how I feel about it, either.

95. That man is a miserable bastard
How dare he? Piece of shit. Puffing himself up because he is "a New Yorker who lost New Yorkers" on 9/11. Fucking hypocrite.

Nicole Miller was 21 years old, a college student. A friend of mine's daughter was friends with her and went to school with her at West Valley College. Nicole died on Flight 93. My friend's daughter was so devastated, she quit school.

Maybe I live in the Bay Area but my daughter lived in Manhattan on 9/11 - thankfully she was safe but she was only about 20 blocks from Ground Zero.

If that frigging idiot thinks none of us here in the Bay Area (including the many who have had sons and daughters killed or wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan) have not been hurt by 9/11 or given our loved ones to recruiters, he's stupider than I thought.

And evidently, he doesn't believe in democracy because he's criticizing a city for exercising their constitutional rights to vote on issues. So he's a terrorist sympathizer AND anti-democracy.

Charming.

Calling for terrorists to bomb an American city is just downright sick.
I hope the conservatives even turn on him, & if they had any sense they would. This is an insult to the memory of all the people who died on 9/11, & since O'Reilly is a New Yorker he should know better. And they say that Democrats are anti-American. I would *never* call on terrorists to come here & bomb a city! So who is really anti-American, Mr. O'Reilly?

That these hateful Republicans have unresolved "issues" of the sexual kind.

I suspect many are closeted bisexuals or homosexuals. They do the very thing they accuse others of and they seem particularly prone to homophobic outbursts.

If the Republican Party doesn't clean up its act it will go extinct like its party symbol.

134. It's been noted on DU that these fake Republicans --
because real conservatives must be outraged at this behavior --

seem to project A LOT. I agree with you.

127. I sent it to his staff
That's why he spent 9 minutes saying his statement about San Francisco was "satire" -- protected speech.

Apparently, O'Reilly doesn't know the difference between satire and terrorism.

The satire of Bill O'Reilly:

"And if Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you , except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead."

Does that read like satire to you?

How DARE that SOB say such things?

He supports this Idiot Son who is supposed to be the Mother of All Terrorist Haters and then he turns around and commits treason by calling for a terrorist attack on San Francisco? A terrorist attack on his own nation, that he is supposedly all patriotic about?

It's like saying you want to shoot yourself in the foot. It's like saying terrorism is suddenly a great way to solve problems.

CLUE FOR YOU, Bill, YOU COWARD:

The only way to defeat terrorism is to find solutions that are NOT terrorism.

That means we don't torture.

We don't bomb.

We don't kill and shatter and maim innocent babies and old people for lies and greed.

When we do those things, we ARE the terrorists.

Today, Mr. O'Liely, every schoolchild in San Francisco who heard your words, who cannot sleep tonight because of the terror they feel, have YOU to blame.

You and your President are the terrorists.

And you know it.

It must totally and completely SUCK to be either of you two.

On edit: Sorry antigone382. Didn't know you were logged in (this is buddyhollysghost who posted. Sorry for any confusion. Knowing my daughter, she won't mind at all....:))

133. I understand. It's a delicate negotiation.
This time, I can down on the side of confronting his @ss.

But, I do understand the logic behind ignoring. Use it every day. It's a good tool. :hi:

I just don't know what to say about this. I feel that if you are going to sell your product around a certain program, you should also understand that you will be tied to the comment and ideas of that program. This response is truly poor thinking and uncaring. If you are thinking of buying a matress, buy anything BUT Tempur-Pedic. I know I will.
