Teacher on Ed Shultz was fired due to her suggestion of support for peace
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 03:47 PM by Mr_Spock
Crazy postal worker in N. Carolina(?) went crazy on her for mentioning all viewpoints on protests before Iraq war.

The guys name is Mark Hann (sp?). Can somebody help him to understand the pain that she is feeling?

School says "Iraq war was not a matter of public concern", therefore she was not allowed to discuss it.

She has filed a lawsuit and has not been able to get another job since then.

This is just wrong. x(

She taught for 20 years and was fired due to the guy mentioned above...

"Calls placed to the Monroe Country Community School system were not returned."

3. Doesn't make any sense
Public school teachers are tenured. They can't be fired because some crazy postal worker doesn't like what they are saying or doing.

Do you have a link or more details? Thanks.

4. Darn, it was on still after I posted - was hoping others would hear it.
The school board is fighting it? - the trial was transferred to Federal Court and she is looking to get a jury trial.

I will listen for any more information. Ed was quite aghast that she could be fired due to one irate parent.

I wish I had heard the entire interview - I was hoping for backup here from others who had heard it...

They said her contract was not renewed after 20 years. They negotiated an arrangement where she would not mention anything to do with the word "peace", but they filed false claims after the incident and her contract was not renewed the next year

15. Even if her contract was not renewed
there is a long legal process involved. It is not at all simple to fire a tenured teacher. And if she had actually been there 20 years, she was definitely tenured.

It costs $35,000 and up to fire a tenured teacher. No way would any school district do it because one parent complained.

Now if this teacher hit a kid, or got into trouble criminally, that would be different. But ONE parent complained and she was fired? No, I don't believe we are getting all the details here.

6. Yeah, They Filed A Sexual Harrassment Complaint
So not only was she fired, she's apparently blackballed from getting a job anywhere.

7. I didn't catch her name...
I dunno  - like I said above, I was hoping others would tune in and maybe someone had heard of her before. He asked her why she was going public now (it's been a couple of years).

8. This it?
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Teacher_and_war_mom_fired_for_discussing_protest_crusades_f_0831.html

RAW STORY caught up with Deb Mayer at Cindy Sheehan’s anti-war protest in Crawford. Mayer was fired for being outspoken about Iraq in the classroom. Her son is a nuclear engineer in the Navy.

Deb Mayer was fired when one of her fourth grade students told a parent Mayer was encouraging students to protest the pending invasion of Iraq. Mayer says she was discussing a current events reading assignment from a Time Magazine issue for children on Iraq, including a section on antiwar demonstrations; a child asked her if she would march in a protest, and Mayer replied by discussing peaceful alternatives to war.

The parent—who Mayer asserts was a postal worker-literally “went postal” at a subsequent meeting with the principal, demanding that Mayer never mention peace in class again. The principal, rather than protecting Mayer’s rights, expressed her expectation that Mayer would comply with the parent’s demand.

17. Makes me wonder what kind of contract she had
and what state regs are not in place there that would have protected a 20 year veteran.

This certainly wouldn't be enough to fire a tenured teacher in my state.

She gave out information to kids on how to get politically involved.

She was fired. These RW motherfuckers need to be taken to task in a serious way...

Evansville, Indiana.

RW school board had her fired. Can't get another job at either public or private schools. Another blackballed teacher...

20. Anyone can file a sexual harrassment complaint against anyone else
In my state, if a complaint is filed against a teacher, it is noted in his/her permanent file held by the state and even if the teacher is exonerated, the complaint remains on file for ten years.

So a complaint like this would definitely keep a teacher from being hired.
