Would you rather be imprisoned for years or receive corporal punishment?

The Saudi Arabia case of the science teacher sentenced for discussing religion made me wonder. My first reaction was that it was "cruel and unusual" punishment. Then I wondered about taking ten years of a person's freedom. You go in at 25 and come at at 35, you've missed the chances to be with loved ones, to have a career. You've missed your physical prime. You've probably lost loved ones while in jail.

With lashes, or even dismemberment, you go through intense pain, and are free. And society pays less to maintain you. The downside is you might not survive the beating, you might lose a limb, and that type of pain doesn't go away--it changes you.

Which is more cruel, to the criminal and to society? Assuming that the person is guilty of a crime our society recognizes as a crime, of course. Which would you prefer to go through?
